Updated: Apr. 26, 2024 -- Fire Country season 2 is speeding toward its end. The finale is set to air on May 17 and, currently, it's unknown if Three Rock will survive this season. The inmate firefighter program caught flack for drugs being sold out of the camp in the first season and now, halfway through season 2, one of the men escaped and got tangled up in a plot that nearly saw him framed for the murder of Edgewater's sheriff.

Due to these events, some of the town's citizens believe that it's not safe to have Three Rock around and they're petitioning for the state to close the facility. The remaining episodes of the season will be partly devoted to the fight to save the camp. In a recent interview, Michael Trucco (Luke Leone) referred to Three Rock as "the beating heart of the show," but many fans have wondered if we'd still stay with the camp once Bode is released from prison.

Personally, I think the series might circle back to Red River, the camp that Sharon wanted to open in season 1. If it does, season 3 might set-up a spin-off that takes place at a facility similar to Three Rock even if CBS does move forward with the sheriff spin-off that's been teased starring Morena Baccarin. Hidden Remote will keep you posted if this happens but, in the meantime, though season 2 hasn't finished yet, we can still discuss the upcoming season. Here's what I know so far!

Fire Country season 3 release window (speculation)

The renewal announcement for Fire Country's third season didn't include a release window that would confirm the series will be returning in the fall but it's pretty much guaranteed that it will unless there are any unforeseen circumstances. One such event would be a work stoppage but not stateside, in Canada. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Writers Guild of Canada has authorized a strike if they cannot come to an agreement with the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA).

You might be thinking, what does this have to do with a U.S. based series? Well, this particular CBS program is filmed in Vancouver. It's not a co-production with a Canadian company, however, that doesn't mean that it might not be impacted. As we saw during the Hollywood strikes last year, some series that continued filming even if they had only one WGA member on staff were picketed. That's not likely to happen with Fire Country because the show is American but they could still face issues while season 3 is in production if a work stoppage happens and Canadian writers are striking.

When the WGA went on strike, Canadian creatives felt the affects. In an interview with CBC last year, Toronto-based screenwriter Anthony Q. Farrell explained how the strike was affecting him.

"Here's the thing: I'm in a very weird, unique position where I'm a member of the Writers Guild of America and the Writers Guild of Canada. I can continue to work on Canadian productions, and Canadian productions that are in co-productions with American studios — but I can't pitch them. And also, this is only because I live in Canada. If I lived in America, the WGC and WGA would be telling you, "All right, you live in America, you stay there. You're part of the WGA strike. Don't come back to Canada to try and find work."

If there are writers on Fire Country's staff that are in a similar position as Farrell, there may be some issue. I've reached out to Paramount Global for comment.

According to WGC Executive Director Victoria Shen (my interview with her will go live Monday, Apr. 29!), which American shows will be impacted if the union goes on strike will be determined on a case-by-case basis. When I asked if U.S. series that film in Canada could be impacted, Shen shared:

"...with respect to the kind of shows that shoot in Canada, it will depend on a case-by-case. Some shows do all the writing in the US and they just shoot here, so there's no writers room. It just really depends on what it looks like. Then different shows might have a Canadian writer or there may be an American writer in a mix with Canadian writers. It will depend on what the writers rooms look like, how people were contracted, what phase of production they happen to be in to be in, you know, maybe there's a show but they're in post and the writing is done.

Practically, it will depend on what kind of labor action we are taking but ultimately all writers guilds around the world will be respecting our strike."

Right now only a strike authorization vote has taken place. The hope is that the union can make a fair agreement with the CMPA and that a strike will not have to go into effect. But just like we saw last year with the WGA, this is a fight for the livelihoods and futures of screenwriters and a strike would be the last resort for the union in order to ensure their jobs aren't under threat due to insufficient compensation, lack of sufficient staffing for writers rooms, and AI.

Should Fire Country not be impacted, we're likely to see season 3 premiere in October. That's the month season 1 premiered. It's doubtful that it'll be moved out of the Friday block particularly with S.W.A.T. returning for a surprise eighth season and Blue Bloods taking its last bow with the second part of season 14. As such, the network will likely keep the show in the 9 p.m. ET slot, though this could change if the potential sheriff spin-off is picked up.

Expected episode count

An episode count hasn't been confirmed, however, an early renewal means that the Fire Country writers can get a head start on piecing together what season 3 is going to look like and the storylines they want to cover. That's especially necessary coming off of a shorter season when you're a program that typically operates with a full season order. For this network that's around 20-22 episodes, and it's expected that's the episode count range that Fire Country will return to.

Having a longer runway for a season allows for the planning of crossovers or arcs that'll take place over several episodes. Season 2 has introduced Sheriff's Sergeant Mickey Fox in "Alert the Sheriff." She could usher in a new era for this franchise and open the door for an expansion. The news surrounding her debut consistently pointed out that the episode was not a backdoor pilot. But if a spin-off is greenlit then we could see one in Fire Country season 3 or even a crossover which would necessitate a higher episode count.

Expected cast

We have one confirmed cast exit so far. Sabina Gadecki won't be a part of the series moving forward, bar a guest star appearance if there are any flashbacks. Her character Cara passed away in episode 5, "This Storm Will Pass." (Here's why Gadecki left the show!)

As for the rest of the cast, Max Thieriot is expected to return for season 3 as he's the lead, Bode Leone, as well as a co-creator and executive producer on the show. Also likely to be in the next season:

  • Diane Farr as Sharon Leone
  • Billy Burke as Vince Leone
  • Stephanie Arcila as Gabriela Perez
  • Jordan Calloway as Jake Crawford
  • Jules Latimer as Eve Edwards
  • Kevin Alejandro as Manny Perez

With Cara gone, and Bode not being Genevieve's biological father, there's a possibility that Alix West Lefler won't be in season 3. Right now the plot has been centered around who will raise Gen. The Leones intend on folding her into their family and for Bode to become her adoptive father once he's released from prison but we'll see where season 2 goes. This series loves a twist!

Given what we've gotten so far with Rafael de la Fuente, I just don't see Diego sticking around for the third season. The show could totally prove me wrong, but we're six episodes in as of me writing this article, and there hasn't been much done to get viewers invested in his relationship with Gabriela. We also haven't learned much about him.

As for Tye White as Cole, he could be in season 3 if the second season doesn't have Bode make parole. With a short season 2 that could be a plot for next season to tackle especially since whether or not Bode made good time was incorporated into last season's finale.

With more news coming in over the next few weeks and months, I'll be updating this article. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote!
