This is not a drill: Mandy Moore has hinted at returning to music and dished on which ‘This Is Us’ kid is her favorite.

More from This Is Us

It’s a good day to be a Mandy Moore fan. Sooner rather than later, you won’t be missing Mandy’s music like candy. The singer who’s got nothin’ but pennies in her pocket and could break our hearts any day of the week is planning a long-overdue return music. For fans who have been sitting on pins and needles for the follow-up to 2009’s Amanda Leigh, it’s a wild hope that this tease comes to fruition. But new music isn’t the only thing Mandy Moore’s teasing.

The This Is Us star caught up with Elle Magazine to promote her partnership with Merck’s “Her Life. Her Adventures.” campaign centered on helping women become educated about birth control and family planning. And who better to front that campaign than Mandy Moore, who plays a woman who thought extensively about her life and her adventures before starting a family. Rebecca Pearson would be all for the message of Moore’s latest partnership, and we’d like to hope she would also appreciate the actress’ candor about becoming a mother (in the future), releasing new music (next year), starring in a Princess Diaries sequel (just a cameo), and which This Is Us child she favors more than the others. Yeah, she went there.

Although Moore wouldn’t divulge which of the Big Three characters she prefers, she did spill which of the adult actors she considers her favorite. Keeping in mind that the cast has grown incredibly close over the course of the first season (how could you not when you’re making a show this emotional?), Moore chose the TV child she feels closest to. Of course, it’s the sweetest answer you could ever anticipate from Mandy Moore as she tells Elle:

"“I would say that I get to spend more time around Chrissy [Metz, who plays Kate] because she’s a lady and we go to events and get gussied up and go to photo shoots together. So I’ve probably spent more one-on-one time with her. But everybody’s a delightful human on every level. We really lucked out. It’s such a wonderful, grounded group of people. I’ve never experienced anything like it.”"

We’re not going to lie, it comes as a surprise that she didn’t name-check her partner in crime and work husband, Milo Ventimiglia. Moore and Ventimiglia share the most screen time together than most of the cast and have created a beautiful and immensely believable chemistry as Jack and Rebecca. However, we’re always here to support women standing up for other women and couldn’t love the TV mother and daughter’s off-screen friendship more if we tried.

During her interview will Elle, Moore also graciously fielded questions about the potential production of Princess Diaries 3, which Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews have both shown interest in. While she didn’t reprise her iconic role as the school queen bee Lana (Regina George who?) in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Mandy Moore wouldn’t turn down a chance for a cameo appearance to clear Lana’s name. And fingers crossed a nostalgic performance of “Stupid Cupid” while she’s at it.

Speaking of music, Moore offered the first true glimpse of possibility for hearing new tunes in the not so distant future. The singer-songwriter recently revealed to People that she has been writing songs in the eight years since her last album was released, which means countless bops are lying in wait to be recorded and adored. According to Moore, finding a home for the music and laying down vocals are the two obstacles standing in our way of another album:

"“When I was thinking about being part of this campaign, it’s about having a plan in place to dream big and think about the adventures you want to take in your life. I miss music and that’s something that was top of mind for me, immediately. I don’t have the mechanism in place like I did when I was younger when I had a record label. I realize it starts with the music, so I have to get my butt back into the studio and actually record something.”"

Since starring in This Is Us has effectively surged Mandy Moore’s career to its previous heights, it’s unfathomable that major record labels aren’t climbing all over themselves to sign the legendary “Candy” singer. With a hit television series and a Golden Globe nomination to her name, her built-in audience and loyal hold over fans from the So Real days would sell singles and albums alike. However her life and her adventures take shape, we’ll be ready for her to be extraordinary, as always.
