Apparently, the costumes on ‘This Is Us’ aren’t actually Emmy worthy

‘This Is Us’ landed an impressive 11 Emmy nominations for its landmark first season, but the Academy just stripped one away.

More from This Is Us

When Emmy nominations were announced last month, This Is Us stood as one of the leading nominees with an astounding and deserved 11 total nominations. Sterling K. Brown, Milo Ventimiglia, Chrissy Metz, and Ron Cephas Jones were honored for their performances, and while we weren’t thrilled with the absence of Mandy Moore, that Outstanding Drama Series made up for it. But one of these nods has just been revoked.

In reviewing the nominees for the Outstanding Contemporary Costumes category, the Academy found an error in This Is Us’ qualifications. As Entertainment Weekly reports, 51 percent of the submitted episode must be set between the past 25 years. However, NBC submitted “Moonshadow,” the emotional Season 1 finale that predominantly features a pre-Big Three Jack and Rebecca in the 1970s. That’s not, well, contemporary. Unfortunately, the stunning design work of Hala Bahmet, Marina Ray, and Elinor Bardach will not longer be nominated, as Netflix’s House of Cards has earned the slot left vacant by This Is Us.

Such are the dangers of employing a significant amount timeline jumping and familial flashbacks in the narrative of a series. While the non-linear format works beyond our wildest dreams as a storytelling device, it won’t always work in favor of costume designers hoping for recognition from the Academy. And to make the revocation sting worse, their work was brilliant in “Moonshadow.” Mandy Moore’s costuming was on point. But the 51 percent rule stands.

Here’s what the Television Academy spokesperson told EW:

"“Having reviewed the ‘Moonshadow’ episode of This Is Us, the Awards Committee noted that the entrant unfortunately miscalculated the proportion of scenes that were period versus contemporary. In fact, the episode is predominately period. The entry (and subsequent nomination) are thereby disqualified.”"
