‘This Is Us’ fans received a surprise during Sunday night’s episode of HBO’s ‘Insecure’ when Sterling K. Brown appeared in a cameo role.

More from This Is Us

If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of Sterling K. Brown on the small screen before This Is Us returns in September, there’s always the Big Three’s upcoming appearance on Hollywood Game Night to tide you over. But on Sunday night’s episode of HBO’s hit comedy series Insecure, those of us eager for more This Is Us got the best of both worlds with Sterling K. Brown’s surprise cameo.

In Issa Rae’s Golden Globe-nominated series about the everyday struggles of modern black women taking on career, friendship, and dating in Los Angeles, Brown appeared as a potential love interest for Yvonne Orji’s Molly, a lawyer with high standards. Brown played Lionel, the absolute perfect man on paper: A marketing consultant, loves kids, gets free tickets to SZA. What’s not to love? Well, he’s too close in personality type to Molly. As much as they hit it off, Molly and Lionel are too similar in their pursuit to tick off life’s boxes to forge a real relationship. So, will this be the last we see of Sterling K. Brown on Insecure this season?

According to showrunner Prentice Penny in The Hollywood Reporter, Sterling K. Brown’s character won’t be sticking around for multiple episodes. Although, the hasty way in which Molly blew off Lionel leaves the door open for future drop-ins by Brown. With the chemistry between Brown and Orji so palpable, it’s unimaginable that fans won’t be demanding closure for the romance that could have been.

Brown’s abbreviated appearance on Insecure makes sense since the This Is Us cast has been hard at work filming Season 2 of their Emmy-nominated series. But Brown was such a big fan of Rae’s comedy series, he couldn’t help but reach out for a small stint before slipping back into Randall Pearson’s shoes. Now we need him to return the favor and host Issa Rae on This Is Us. We also need Sterling K. Brown and Yvonne Orji to star in the romantic comedy she pitches in the video clip below!
