Have you forgotten the smaller moments of This Is Us? Let’s rewind to Season 1, Episode 13 and recap five things you might have missed.

More from This Is Us

To say that Jack and Rebecca have their hands full with Kevin, Kate, and Randall on This Is Us would be an understatement. Three vastly individual children of the same age? Yeah, that doesn’t exactly come with an owner’s manual. When the Big Three hit the double digits and want to celebrate their birthdays separately, Jack and Rebecca are in over their heads.

This Is Us throws it back to another big day, but one that’s much less marked by grief and emotional upheaval. As the Big Three celebrate hitting the big 1-0, they announce that they would like their own birthday parties. But in present day, they are far from throwing a party. Randall avoids work pressure with William, Kate grins and bears her weight loss retreat, and Kevin uses three sentences to make a grand romantic gesture for an unexpected lucky lady. Do you remember how the birthday parties went? How about William’s special drink of choice? And surely you couldn’t have forgotten about Kevin’s surprise romantic reveal? Let’s rewind and revisit five things you might have missed in Season 1, Episode 13.

1. Jack wants to have another baby.

Ummm, come again, Jack? To put this into perspective, let’s all just remember that Jack was 36 when the Big Three were born, and as they are turning 10, he proposes having another baby to Rebecca. The man must be a 46-year-old masochist. Surprisingly, Rebecca considers the concept of another Pearson more than she does the idea of getting a dog. But once they throw three simultaneous parties for their triplets, adding to the family loses its luster.

2. William goes for a drive.

Having ended his chemo treatments, William’s energy levels have risen and implanted him with a renewed zest for life. At the same time, Randall’s pressures at work reach all time highs, but their father-son duo meet in the middle for a relaxed long lunch. William attempts to regain his past glory with his favorite jazz tunes and his favorite drink (an egg cream) while learning how to drive. These are the moments Randall and William will hold onto as the going gets tougher.

3. The Big Three have three birthday parties.

As previously mentioned, the Big Three demand a change up to the birthday tradition. Kate wants a Madonna party, Kevin wants a Princess Bride party, and Randall wants a magician. Zero thematic overlap to make Jack and Rebecca’s lives easier. Furthermore, few kids show up to Randall’s party (which he doesn’t mind) and Kevin poaches Kate’s friends, leaving her vogue-ing on her own. Being spread thin between the Big Three allows Jack and Rebecca to be thankful for what they have.

4. Kate screams out her demons.

Following Toby’s emergency surgery and their engagement, Kate opts out of her gastric bypass citing fear of one of them going under the knife again. Instead, her doctor proposes an immersive weight loss experience that focuses less on losing the weight and understanding what’s holding you back. While there, Kate doesn’t respond well to the strategies until an obnoxious worker named Duke gets inside her head. Finally, Kate gets to the root of her struggles — Jack’s death — and This Is Us shows us Jack’s funeral as Kate releases a cathartic scream.

5. Kevin and Sophie are childhood sweethearts.

Here’s a plot twist: Kevin has an ex-wife! Although he laments losing both Olivia and Sloane, Kevin spends and afternoon with Toby and gains the courage to make a grand romantic gesture. But he doesn’t run to either of his former flames. Rather, he runs to Sophie, his ex-wife and Kate’s former childhood best friend. He doesn’t immediately win her back, but they plan to talk. Try not to bawl your eyes out when 10-year-old Kevin tells Jack and Rebecca that he loves Sophie and planned his party for her. Our hearts can’t handle this.
