This Is Us made us love Sophie even more than we already did, and we’re ready to name her our new favorite character.

More from This Is Us

Jack who? Our former favorite characters on This Is Us have been tossed to the wayside to make room for our new queen, Sophie. In Season 1, we didn’t have enough time to truly get to know the woman once known as Sophie Pearson (assuming she took Kevin’s name when they were married), but Season 2 has been giving us the inside scoop on the low key best character in the extensive cast.

Don’t worry, we have reasoning to back up this bold claim, and go ahead and put down your torches. We still love Jack (even though we’ve been known to have some choice words for the Pearson patriarch) and Randall and obviously Beth. But This Is Us has been keeping Sophie’s greatness hidden behind all of Kevin’s neuroses, and it’s time we acknowledged she’s truly the better half of “Kevin and Sophie.” As evidenced by Sophie not putting up with any of Kevin’s crap in “A Manny-Splendored Thing,” Sophie rose through the rankings of the This Is Us MVPs — the Most Valuable Pearsons.

For starters, Sophie merely entertained Kevin while he was spiraling about his “ab game,” which is in fact strong, because she understands that he can get in his head about, well, everything. Kevin Pearson spends a lot of time complaining and ignoring his own privileges, but Sophie sits back with a smile as he stresses about being as well-liked as George Clooney on E.R.

One of the most effective uses of the This Is Us signature time-jumping narrative comes with the flashbacks to Kevin and Sophie as the eight-year-old Cory and Topanga-esque grade school lovebirds. When Kevin performed an interesting impression of Mr. T at the school talent show, she was the only one in the audience laughing, and it’s her laugh that helps him through his humiliating return to The Man-ny.

But should we be concerned about their relationship? The cheerleading seems to be tragically one-sided at the moment as Kevin’s priorities remain on his career, and Sophie sacrifices time with her sick mother to fly to LA to be with him. How long can they maintain the honeymoon period of their rekindled romance before the you-know-what hits the fan and they have to have those hard conversations about mutual support?

Until Kevin and Sophie run into the inevitable rough patch, we’ll be watching and applauding Sophie every time she claps back at one of Kevin’s ridiculous hesitations or frustrations. Although ol’ Kev might not fully deserve her, she’s the empowered female character we deserve. Can you imagine Beth and Sophie’s powers combined as in-laws sitting at the Thanksgiving table? Oh, This Is Us powers that be, grant us more time with our new favorite character.

This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
