Castiel has had some beautiful, sad, and powerful moments.

When it comes to Castiel, he’s an angel of mystery at times. Once God’s loyal solider, he became rebellious and fell from grace. He has always tried to do what he believes is right, even when that meant letting all the Leviathans out of Purgatory to stop Raphael. Some of his best moments have been him at his most powerful, but others have been him at his weakest and most vulnerable.

For the fifth day of Cas-mas, we’re bringing you a rundown of the nine best Castiel moments in Supernatural so far.

#9. Meeting Kevin for the first time

When most people met Cass for the first time he showed off his power. Or he had to pretend to be an FBI agent for a case. That didn’t happen for Kevin. When the two met, Cass had taken on the broken wall and was as crazy as crazy can be.

In fact, the first meeting was in the back of the Impala. Castiel appeared thanks to Meg telling them the marker sign they were passing and Kevin would have jumped out of the car had the door not been firmly closed and the vehicle moving. And rather than say “hello,” Castiel just boops Kevin on the nose.

#8. Pretending to be FBI the first time

This is technically two moments in one, but the scenes connect to each other. When Cass and Dean go on their first case alone together, Castiel has to pretend to be an FBI agent. He just doesn’t understand why they’re lying when lying is wrong, leading to one of my personal favorite Dean lines about lying to become president.

After that, Castiel shows off his badge. Of course the badge is upside down. However, unlike when Charlie does it later, Castiel has a straight face as if it’s nothing out of the ordinary. Mixed between that deadpan expression and Dean’s attempts to cover up the mistake, it’s definitely one of Castiel’s best scenes.

#7. Turning up mid-phone call

In season 5’s “My Bloody Valentine,” Dean is on the phone to Castiel about the case. Dean needs to tell his angel friend where he and Sam are. Rather than waiting to hang up, Castiel drops in mid-phone call just behind Dean.

There are a few reasons this is such a great moment. The main one is Cass’ lack of understanding of human interaction and using the phone at this point. This was also the season where one of his best lines came in. A second reason is that it continued Castiel getting into Dean’s personal space.

#6. His protection with April

In season 9, Cass becomes human and finally has sex for the first time. Unfortunately it’s with someone he definitely couldn’t trust, but there’s a cute moment afterwards. Dean learns that Castiel had sex with April and wants to know if Cass had protection. Of course, Cass’ first thought is protection against evil and makes it clear that he had his angel blade.

It continues Castiel’s learning of the human world. While he is starting to get there with pop culture references, there is still a lot to pick up. It also links well it a fun (just not one of the best) moments in season 5, when Castiel tells the stripper about her father Gene hating his job at the post office.

#5. What he learned from the pizza man

If there is one relationship that is fun on Supernatural, it’s Megstiel. The two just shouldn’t work, but they really do. Meg looked after Castiel when he was at his weakest in season 7. It was the moment after one of Castiel’s best lines about the pizza man that their relationship reached their max point.

When Meg suggests that she will sacrifice herself to allow Castiel and the Winchesters to deal with their fight, Cass grabs her and kisses her against the wall. The Winchesters just don’t know where to look. There are no apologies from Cass, making it clear that he still didn’t understand much about human interaction. Instead, he just made it clear that porn had taught him something.

#4. The Enochian riddle

Cass is a smart angel, but pop culture and riddles sometimes slip past him. It’s just a good job that Sam was around at the time. This was a point that was going to go into the best lines piece, but then I realized it’s the whole scene that makes it funny and the perfect mix of danger and humor.

Castiel sees a riddle in Enochian about why six is scared of seven. His instant thought is to look at it logically and view seven has superior as a prime number. Anyone who loves prime numbers will instantly connect more to Cass in this moment than ever before. However, it’s Sam’s response with the punchline of the riddled joke of how seven ate nine and then Cass realizing that it was a riddle to work out. Of course, to finish off the scene, Castiel reveals he knows about Lord of the Rings and has become pop culture-savvy.

#3. Castiel’s entrance to the show

Out of all the entrances on TV, Castiel’s will always remain one of the best. In fact, it’s the best entrance. After a whole episode of wondering whose handprint was on Dean and who was trying to communicate with him, Dean and Bobby finally find a way to summon him. Nobody expected angels to play a part in Supernatural until this point, especially since Eric Kripke had initially said angels wouldn’t be in it.

When Castiel walked in, lights literally exploded. He knocked Bobby out with just a touch and the bullets fired into him didn’t make him flinch at all. Nobody knew whether to trust him or not, even when he introduced himself as Castiel, Angel of the Lord.

#2. Telling the Winchesters he loves them

Supernatural season 12 was hard. During the middle of it, there was a fear that we were going to lose our angel after Ramiel stabbed him with the Lance of Michael. Eventually Crowley was able to save Cass, but that was after one of the best moments for the SPNFamily.

As Castiel died, he told the Winchesters just how much he loved them. It was heartbreaking and bittersweet. The writers know how to pull at the heartstrings when they need to and this was one of those instances.

#1. Going from Baby in a Trenchcoat to Toddler in a Trenchcoat

The best Castiel moment of all so far has to be season 13. That’s right! This season has had the best moment. After Castiel wakes up in the Empty, he faces off against the Cosmic Entity. Rather than back down about his wishes, Castiel embodies every parents’ worst nightmare: a toddler who just doesn’t want to go back to sleep!

It’s a powerful moment for Castiel, and powerful in a good way. Sure, he’s been powerful before, but usually at the expense of the world or in a way that damages his relationship with the Winchesters. In this moment, his only goal was to get back to the Winchesters and Jack to make sure they remained safe.
