Just who are the best members of the Supernatural spin-off?

Okay, quite honestly, each of the members of Wayward Sisters bring something different to the table. The writers have done a superb job in create different personalities for all six women on the series (yes, still counting Kaia here, as there’s a chance she’ll return to the light side). It’s easy to tell them apart without having to look up at the screen (although I couldn’t take my eyes off for a minute). If this was a book, it would be simple to tell who was doing the talking and carrying out the actions.

But there are always favorite and least favorite characters on any show. There are certain characters who will stand out the most and others that still have some work to adapt and grow.

More from Supernatural

This ranking doesn’t mean there’s a character that shouldn’t be on the show. Nor does it mean I don’t support the Supernatural spin-off. Each character has a reason to be there. They will draw in different fans and speak volumes to individuals.

With that in mind, it’s time to rank the characters right now. This is wholly based on the character portrayals up to (and including) “Breakdown.” Yes, I’m including the latest episode because it was Donna’s story; it’s her reason to join Sioux Falls and the other characters. The episode also showed an entirely different side to this quirky character, which is important for the rankings.

So, without further adieux, here’s a look at the ranking for the Wayward Sisters cast.

Claire Novak

My heart sunk when I realized Claire was the main focus for the Supernatural spin-off. This isn’t a character I’ve been able to connect to much. Part of me knows that’s because I’m not a teenage girl anymore and I admit that I’ve forgotten what it was like to be a teenage girl at times. It’s easy to forget the raging hormones and that’s without the supernatural elements and losing both parents. I have no idea what it would be like for Claire.

However, the character has just rubbed me the wrong way sometimes. But she grew on me a little in “Wayward Sisters.” Hunting has done her some good. That opening scene was a powerful way to show that she’s matured into a supportive and caring young woman with plenty of baggage. This is a side of her character that needs to come out more.

Likewise, Kathryn Love Newton’s acting has improved tremendously. There are still more ways she can improve, but so far she looks promising; a star in the making.

So, why is she at the bottom? Well, there’s still some work that needs to happen on her character. Claire is still a little bratty at times, but maybe that will all change now that she’s learned a valuable and heartbreaking life lesson. Also, the ending of the episode was a little cheesy and that was partially Claire’s voiceover element.

While I look forward to seeing more to come from Claire, there are other characters I’m more interested in.

Patience Turner

I surprised myself with the ranking of this character. Initially worried about another teenage girl, I liked Patience initially. But there was something off about the character in the Supernatural spin-off. While she was still kind-hearted and sweet, there was an element of her that was a little too over-the-top. But this is something the show can certainly work on.

Again, this may have something to do with the lack of being able to connect with a teenage character. Sometimes it’s hard to see the situation from the character’s side, which can cloud judgment and I fully admit that may be the case here.

However, the writing was a little bit back-and-forth. After finding out what evenings were really like for Jody and her girls, Patience panicked. She decided to ignore the initial vision and just get away; deciding that it wasn’t for her. Not just that, but she had this idea that she was in the wrong for leaving her dad; that she wanted him to accept her back. It’s a sad state of affairs when a daughter doesn’t feel welcome to return home and I blame the writing in “The Bad Place” for that. The Supernatural writers should have handled James Turner a lot better!

In the end, Patience does decide to stick around. She helps to save the day, killing her first monster, and accepts that she’s now part of the dysfunctional family. There’s still hope for the development of this character, but right now she’s one of my least favorites.

Alex Jones

The last of the youngest is the next on the list. Initially, Alex was difficult to like. Not only was she suspected of being the bad guy in her introductory episode, but she also seemed relatively bland in the next one. Things have started to change in the latest episode and she’s finally a character that gets to step out more.

For one, Alex is grateful for everything that Jody is doing for her. Jody didn’t have to take Alex in and help her find success and happiness in life. Jody didn’t have to take either Claire or Alex in, but chose to open her heart. Part of Claire’s problem for me is the seemingly lack of appreciation for Jody (at least up until “Wayward Sisters”). Alex, on the other hand, has always shown how grateful she is.

But also, Alex has made a point that saving the world doesn’t mean someone has to go out and hunt the monsters. There are people behind the scenes; the ones in the supportive positions. Wayward Sisters is setting up the women to be a little more like the military. While Claire is frontline, with Jody and Donna at her side, Alex is the support; the one that stands back, gets the information and finds ways to kill.

It was also fun to see Alex hold down a job and fight monsters at the same time. It’s an element that’s never really been shown on Supernatural, but something many fans have wanted to see possible for a long time.

Kaia Nieves

Some will say Kaia shouldn’t be included at all on the list. After all, she’s not one of the Wayward Sisters anymore. It looks like she’s going to be the villain of the series. However, she stole hearts and she ended up being the most selfless of all the characters.

Kaia earns this position because she grew so much in the episode. It was easy to understand why she was closed off and refused to trust anyone. Nobody had ever given her a reason for her to trust them in the past, so why would she start doing that now? However, she had a connection with Claire that would help to cement the change throughout the episode.

However, there was still a major flaw. The only reason she even considered talking to Claire was because of the comparison of scars. Surely just seeing Claire and Jody take down a monster from The Bad Place should have been enough for Kaia to realize that these two women were badass; maybe not enough to trust them, but at least enough to share what she knew about those particular monsters.

And it was because of these scars that Kaia started to true Claire. This slight change to her personality happened a little too quickly, but I guess that had to be the case for the backdoor pilot. There was just 40 minutes to have Claire and Kaia to connect for Claire to be distraught over Kaia’s death.

This Dark Kaia will be interesting. Yadira Guevara-Prip certainly has a lot of potential and her coming in as the villain is sure to shake things up.

Jody Mills

Thought I’d put Jody first? That would be too obvious, right? Well while Jody is an awesome character and I jumped for joy when I first heard the spin-off would include her, she certainly has her faults. One of those is she can be a little too judgmental. There’s an element of over-protectiveness to her, although it’s extremely understandable why she is like that. Jody has already lost a child and she doesn’t want to go through that again.

Jody does have the benefit of showing something similar to Alex: she can hunt and hold down a job at the same time. In fact, her job can sometimes be highly beneficial, since she has access to extra records and information.

Something Jody needs to work on is listening more. Just because she is the adult, doesn’t mean she will always know best. Alex and Claire are clearly grateful, but sometimes things can seem a little stifling for them.  It’s time for Jody to take a small step back. And she’s certainly started to and has shown willingness to, but there’s still more to do.

While we’ve seen plenty of Jody in a maternal role, it’s also time to see more about her. Wayward Sisters will give the writers more time to develop her outside of her job and her family life. This is the chance to add more layers to this character that is strong, caring, loving and selfless.

Donna Hanscum

Originally, Donna was a little lower on the list. While she can be extremely entertaining, it seemed that all she offered was comedic relief. That’s necessary in a show like the Supernatural spin-off, but there has to be more to someone like Donna.

That’s exactly what “Breakdown” gave fans. Not only were we reminded that she had a boyfriend, who she loved dearly, back home, but that she is also a strong-minded and capable sheriff. This isn’t a woman who is just the butt of all the jokes. She’s not someone who should just turn up with the odd laughable one-liner. Donna is the sheriff of her town and has a personality to match that.

“Breakdown” gave us the protective and smart Donna; the one that would have been promoted to sheriff. We finally saw her in action, going after the monster and taking care of the ones she loved. She didn’t stop to take a breath unless she had to and she was willing to show her abilities to make sure people talked when necessary.

There are so many layers to Donna that she’s a character the writers have only just begun exploring. This is a character who has a lot to teach the young women of Wayward Sisters and a lot more to give to the fans.

As I said at the start, this doesn’t mean I can’t stand any of the characters and I don’t support the show. This ranking just shows who I want to see on the screen and who I’ll look forward to catching week after week. It’s also a look at things I want to see for the characters moving forward.
