Why Rowena’s comment about Crowley was perfect on Supernatural

Rowena and Crowley may not have always got along, but her comment about his death was perfect on Supernatural.

Supernatural Season 13, Episode 12 saw the return of Rowena McLeod. The powerful witch returned in style, double crossing everyone she was working with depending on her own gain. While seeing her look out for herself was expected, there were a couple of unexpected, standout, emotional moments. One of those involved Crowley, who the SPNFamily know isn’t coming back in the form of Mark Sheppard.

Fans will remember that Rowena was killed by Lucifer before Crowley sacrificed himself in the alternate world. It’s not surprising then that Rowena had no idea what had happened to Crowley. In fact, nobody except the Winchesters and Castiel will really know the truth, since it all happened in the alternate dimension. Rowena could only learn the truth from the pesky Winchesters.

And that’s just what happened. Rowena asked them outright, knowing they would likely have some information. Rather than beating around the bush, they told her straight that he died a hero.

"“I’d rather have an alive son, who hated me, than a dead hero.”"

Rowena’s comment was perfect. To be honest, Supernatural has always got the Rowena/Crowley dynamic perfect. A product of their time, Rowena found herself resentful of her son. There was never any love lost, but it was clear that while she may have resented him there was always that mother’s love; that unconditional connection.

The wording of the line is also interesting. Rowena never said that she hated him. She pointed out that he hated her, but she could accept that if he was alive. As a mother, she would mourn the loss of her son. It brought another layer to her character that hadn’t really been seen in detail in the series, just hinted at with the odd line.

Unfortunately, Crowley isn’t returning to Supernatural. At least, he won’t in the form of Mark Sheppard. The actor confirmed he was leaving the series for good and it was clear from tweets he wasn’t entertaining the idea of returning in the future. However, Crowley can always come back as another actor; he’s a demon remember! The chances of that happening are slim, since there would be plenty of fans angry at this decision. Nobody can be Crowley except Mark Sheppard.
