While many fans want Supernatural Season 14 and believe it will happen, it’s not confirmed just yet.

Jim Michaels took to Twitter to confirm that there’s no news on the Supernatural Season 14 renewal just yet. While many fans expect it to happen, the future is still in the air. That means we can’t get complacent as a fanbase and stop tuning in, thinking the new season is a done deal.

It’s easy to understand why many people think Season 14 is confirmed already. The CW boss, Mark Pedowitz, shared that there would always be a home for the series. There were just two conditions and one of those was that Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki still wanted to do the series. The second condition was on the viewer ratings. Audiences had to keep tuning in.

Not only does watching live tell the network that you want the series, but it’s also good for the advertisers. And advertisers are needed for the future of the network. If a show doesn’t bring in enough people, they can’t command as much for the ad placement, so the network will look for more popular shows instead.

Supernatural has been on the firing line in the past. During Seasons 6 and 7 the ratings dropped considerably, leading to it being put on a Friday night. This is known as the death slot in TV, since very few people watch live on Friday nights. It’s the night that most shows go to die. Just recently on The CW, The Vampire Diaries, Reign, and The Originals have moved to Fridays and ended a year or so later. Supernatural is one of a few shows to make it through the death slot and get promoted back up to a good night—now on one of the best nights for TV, a Thursday!

So, it’s important not to get complacent. Supernatural Season 14 isn’t confirmed just yet and The CW will keep looking at those ratings. The total audience figures were down considerably last week, sitting at the lowest for the season when the Thanksgiving episode is taken out of the running.

Episode 13, “Devil’s Bargain,” sees Danneel Ackles’ first appearance as Sister Jo, a faith healer. Lucifer will turn to her to get help to gain his powers back.
