Supernatural Season 13 theories: Has Asmodeus taken the trickster’s powers?
Lucifer made it clear that Asmodeus’ shape-shifting powers aren’t from him. Is it possible that the Supernatural Season 13 King of Hell got his powers from a certain trickster archangel?
Caution: There are major spoilers from Supernatural Season 13, Episode 13.
The wish that many of us wanted to happen but didn’t quite believe it would finally came true. Supernatural Season 13 has seen the return of a certain archangel, formally known as the trickster. And now we may have an answer to how Asmodeus got those shape-shifting, voice modulating powers.
Lucifer made it very clear to Castiel that Asmodeus’ shape-shifting powers definitely didn’t come from him. It certainly wasn’t a power we ever saw the other Princes of Hell use, although Dagon did seem to have a couple of extra ones compared to Azazel and Ramiel. However, Asmodeus has gained a major upgrade.

Now that the trickster archangel is back, it’s easy to see the resemblance in powers. Sure enough, those powers that Asmodeus currently has look a lot like the powers Gabriel once had. Remember “Changing Channels?” Gabriel was able to quickly transform in and out of different shapes. He showed those powers in “Mystery Spot” and even in his first appearance in Supernatural Season 2, “Tall Tales.”
Gabriel’s ability to shape shift is one of the reasons he’s known as Loki, the God of Mischief. It’s the reason he was believed to be a trickster. He could make worlds appear, memories adapt and warp realities.
How does Asmodeus have those powers?
Now, of course, the big question is how Asmodeus could possibly have those powers. We’ve never seen power stealing before on Supernatural. If it was that well-known, surely every demon or angel would have done it by now.
It is possible that it’s through grace stealing. However, can a demon steal an angel’s grace? And would that mean the demon would get all of the angel’s powers?

Asmodeus gaining the powers from Gabriel would also mean Gabriel has been around in the dungeon for a while. After all, Asmodeus has been able to shape shift from the second episode of the season (and likely before). There are many who believe Asmodeus’ errand was to get Gabriel, but he told Ketch that it was to get the archangel blade. It almost seems like he’d already captured Gabriel before this point.
And it’s certainly clear Gabriel has been around for a while. He’s been tortured and maimed. This was likely to get information on the archangel blade location, but could have also been a way for Asmodeus to get Gabriel’s powers.
