2018 seemed so far away for Adventure Time fans. Sadly, the time is moving faster and so is the ending of the beloved series. A huge show for Cartoon Network and a part of the 2010 Cartoon renaissance, it’s hard to imagine it ending so soon. With Adventure Time wrapping up, what will fill the void left by it?

Before talking about the alternatives for Adventure Time, let’s look at Cartoon Network. At 25 years old, the network has been full of ups and down. It started off promising at the beginning including airing original programming, older syndicated shows and eventually had its own anime segment. Right now, the network is a sort of limbo with old shows ending and Teen Titans Go! making up a majority of the schedule.

For years, things were great until the show made a move toward live-action shows. After failed attempts with live-action, the channel returned to its roots with cartoons. One introduced during that era was Adventure Time. Airing for over 8 years, the series had a huge part in Cartoon Network’s recent success. The series finale has yet to be announced, but it is sure to be a huge and highly-watched event.

Looking into the future, there are few shows who could take Adventure Time’s place. A huge contender is Steven Universe, a product of a former Adventure Time employee. Rebecca Sugar has created a vast world full of adventure, complex characters and themes. Of all the shows currently airing, Steven Universe is most likely to be the show’s successor, at least for fans of the series.

While Steven Universe is incredibly beloved, there are a few oddball picks fans of Adventure Time might gravitate towards. We Bare Bears follows three brother bears who have funny misadventures and shenanigans. It’s more on the realistic side (well for a show about three bear brothers), but it shares a similar charm to Adventure Time.

Some other possible contenders are Infinity Train, a 2019 show greenlight after fans loved the show’s pilot, Summer Camp Island, Craig of the Creek and Apple and Onion. Ultimately, it will be up to what fans like and prefer versus another.

One thing is for certain and it’s that Adventure Time is truly irreplaceable. It created such a vast world full of wonderful characters, life lessons and fandom. It was relatable, fun and part of a cartoon renaissance of sorts. The impact of Adventure Time will be everlasting even when the show is long gone.
