Houses of the Holy introduced the idea of angels in the Supernatural universe. While it turned out to be a spirit, it was still an important episode to pave the way for Castiel.

Supernatural Season 2 tested the waters with “Houses of the Holy.” The spirit was considered an angel at first, with even Sam believing that it was possible. He was certain that if there was so much bad in the world that there had to be good. While we now know there are angels, it’s clear that sometimes demons are better.

However, Supernatural Season 2, Episode 13 is still an important episode. It also has some excellent lines, that are even funnier with what we know today. Here are the seven best lines from the episode.

I get the sense God’s a little busy for house calls. No, He … He sent someone.

Sam goes to talk to the woman who killed a man, only to learn that she believes she was doing God’s work. When God asks if she actually spoke to God–or believes she did–the woman admits that was definitely not the case. This line is even funnier now, knowing that Chuck wasn’t too busy for house calls but disinterested in the world.

Yeah, you know what? There’s a ton of lore on unicorns too. In fact, I hear that they … they ride on silver moonbeams, and they shoot rainbows out of their ass.

As Sam tries to argue that there’s more lore about angels than any other monster hunted, Dean retorts with this about unicorns. Sure enough, some of the make-believe will have more lore than the real stuff, because it’s all fiction and pretend. Dean had an excellent way of pointing that out, especially now we know a lot of the lore Sam must have found is wrong.

Roma Downey made him do it. Now, I, uh … got the victim’s address.

Dean did have a lot of good one-off lines in this episode. This one was important because of how much I loved Touched By an Angel growing up. It looks like Dean loved the series too!

Exactly. With our own eyes. That’s hard proof, okay?

If you ever needed to know if Dean believed in something, then you just have to read this line. He believes in anything that he’s seen. The supernatural doesn’t surprise him, but he won’t believe in angels until he sees one. Well, it just so happens he’ll get to see one in a couple of years time.

So they’re not really the Hallmark card version that everybody thinks? They’re fierce, right? Vigilant?

Sam has an important line that comes up later in the series. He sees a painting of the archangel Michael smiting with his flaming sword. He and Father Reynolds discuss how angels are soldiers and not the creatures that sit on clouds and play harps all day. While angels may not have been fully considered at this point in Supernatural, it’s easy to see that Season 2 was setting up the potential lore.

Well, it’s all starting to make sense. Devoted priest dies a violent death? That’s vengeful spirit material right there.

Sam continues to look for any sign that this could be an angel. Meanwhile, Dean has his hunter brain on. He’s certain that it’s something “normal” in their supernatural world, and things point towards vengeful spirit. This line is so great because it continues to remind us that Dean isn’t stupid. He may sometimes act it, but he knows hunting.

I call upon the archangel Raphael, master of the air, to make open the way. Let the fire of the Holy Spirit now descend, that this being might be awakened to the world beyond.

It takes the Last Rites to allow Father Gregory to pass on. The line from Father Reynolds is important though. It mentions Raphael, the archangel we later see go up against Castiel and attempt to rule over Heaven after the Apocalypse. This is just the first reference to the angel, before he was even considered a character on the series.
