The video was a timely reminder for a nation addicted to cell phones — addicted even while driving. Mark Wahlberg didn’t mince words when describing just how bad the situation has gotten.

He is teaming up with the Kiefer Foundation, which was started by a father who tragically lost his son to a distracted driver. Wahlberg relayed that “Ten people are killed in this country every day by distracted drivers.”

There isn’t anything sadder than the senseless death of innocent people, and Wahlberg is leading the charge to make sure that the nation wakes up and realizes the severity of the situation. He, himself,  has pledged to put his phone down, something that will hopefully inspire others to do the same.

Eventually, we have to ask ourselves, is it really worth risking the lives of others to answer that text that just popped up on the screen? It’s as simple as that. Enough is enough.

Texting while driving is illegal in almost every state. But for some reason, those laws aren’t being paid attention to. We must begin to value the lives of those driving around us more than we value those text messages or social media updates. There isn’t any reason this should go on any longer.

We also must go back to the basics as far as vehicle safety is concerned. Vehicles are weapons with massive potential for harm — we must be aware of this every time we get in to drive somewhere.

At some point, we need to deeply consider what kind of world we want our children and our grandchildren to live in. Do we want them to have to take the wheel while tons of people are around them are on their phones taking selfies and texting friends? Or do we want them to be in a safe driving environment where everyone is looking out for one another?

The sooner we take Mark Wahlberg’s words seriously, the safer we’ll all be. Just think about it, “the number one killer of young people” can be destroyed overnight if we just put down our phones.

It’s time to end this tragedy.
