Supernatural finally aired the Scooby-Doo crossover, Scoobynatural. The episode was everything and more than I hoped it would be, bringing in four (well, three and a bit) of my must-haves for the episode.

“Scoobynatural” was the most highly anticipated episode of the year. Supernatural crossing over with Scooby-Doo has been needed for a very long time and it definitely didn’t disappoint. It included four of my must-haves–well, okay, three and a bit, since I’m technically including an “I don’t understand that reference” moment.

This “Scoobynatural” recap is going to be slightly different to normal, as it has to be one of those you watch to get the full experience. Instead, here’s a look at the most important moments from the episode.

Taking down Barney

More from Supernatural

The episode opens with the Winchesters taking down Barney. Okay, not really Barney but there was a Barney reference. The Winchesters took down a giant green dinosaur, which they believe to be a cursed object. The owner of the pawn shop thanks them and offers them anything they would like, although Shady Real Estate Guy clearly doesn’t like the Winchesters. It’s clear why very soon.

An episode we all know

One of the best things about the whole episode was getting the cast of Scooby Doo to voice their parts for “Scoobynatural.” Honestly, it made the episode more fun. But there was also the inclusion of an episode we all likely know. The one where Scooby and the Gang have to spend the night in a haunted house for money left to Scooby in a will.

Dean knows exactly how it’s all going to play out and shares all the spoilers. Of course, it turns out the episode doesn’t play out like the episode of Scooby-Doo Dean knows. We get a favorite with a Supernatural twist.

Connecting with the Scooby Gang

The match ups in the episode worked out just as expected. Dean spent a lot of time flirting with Daphne and attempting to go up against Fred; Sam and Velma had their team up; Castiel matched with Shaggy and Scooby.  Maybe that was a little cliche, but it was an episode of Scooby-Doo.

Throughout the episode they all ran into their problems but appreciated their team ups. Dean and Velma connected, as Velma started to learn the supernatural was real but Sam helped protect her innocence in the end; Castiel thanked Shaggy and Scooby for learning how to laugh in the face of danger; Dean saw that Fred was actually a good guy, although didn’t get the girl.

What was also cool was seeing how the Scooby Gang dealt with the knowledge of the supernatural. Each had their own nervous breakdown, but Shaggy was perfect as he realized he’d been telling the truth the whole time.

The mention of the Trickster

Who didn’t love that mention of the Trickster, and Dean questioning if he’s even dead? We all thought at one point that Gabriel was to do with the episode, but then Andrew Dabb told us otherwise. So would it be a witch? How about something gone wrong in the bunker?

Nope, it was the first ever creature we saw on the show: a vengeful spirit (the Woman in White was a vengeful spirit). A young boy was being used by the Shady Real Estate Guy and the young boy explained that sometimes he gets so angry. This was actually a sweet but sad ending, as the Winchesters burned the pen knife he was connected to to free the boy ghost, so he could cross over to find his dad.

Oh and we can’t forget that the young boy helped the Winchesters set the Scooby Gang back on the road to discovering very normal mysteries.

All the classic Scooby Doo references

Throughout the episode, there were various Scooby Doo classic moments. We saw them running through the doors to the theme song, had the classic personalities of each, and even had THAT LINE at the very end. As the Shady Real Estate Guy (it’s always a Shady Real Estate Guy) was loaded into the police car, because of not paying his taxes, he called the Winchesters and Castiel the “meddling kids.”

The only thing missing? The Scooby Snacks! How can you have “Scoobynatural” without Scooby Snacks?
