Was Supernatural Season 13, Episode 19 the most vulnerable we’ve ever seen Rowena?

Rowena killed reapers to get Death’s attention in Supernatural Season 13, Episode 19. It was possibly the most vulnerable we’ve ever seen her and likely the most we ever will.

The Supernatural writers have pulled out the stops when it’s come to emotion. Characters have shown emotion they’ve never really had the chance to before. Earlier in the season, we saw Dean at his angriest. Now, it looks like Supernatural Season 13, Episode 19 has given us Rowena at her most vulnerable.

It was a development foreshadowed in Episode 12. When she returned, she learned that Crowley had died and was upset about that. As she pointed out: she’d rather have an alive son who hated her than a dead hero. Crowley may have sacrificed himself for the sake of the world, but it was really a selfish action to trap Lucifer.

From that moment, Rowena went on a mission to get her son back. Yet, it wasn’t until the end of “Funeralia” that we really understood what she wanted. She broke down in front of Death, throwing a toddler tantrum on the surface but saying everything a parent feels when their child has died or is in danger.

Rowena’s feelings weren’t exactly that surprising

For some, Rowena’s feelings and actions may have been surprising. After all, she allowed for her grandson to go back to the past and die on the ship he was always destined to die on. If she could allow something like that then why wouldn’t she just let Crowley rest in peace, wherever he may be?

Well, Rowena never knew her grandson. His place in time was disrupting the natural order of things and causing the deaths of innocent people because of a vengeful spirit. Also, she knew that he originally had died.

When it came to Crowley, she’d given birth to him. Sure, she wasn’t winning any Mother of the Year awards, but that didn’t stop her loving him as her own son. She watched him grow and then worked with (and against) him when she returned in his life. They had a love/hate relationship, but he was always her boy Fergus, and that was the boy she was mourning.

We saw Rowena as a vulnerable mother, but don’t expect to see it again. Now it’s time to focus on killing Lucifer and stopping Michael from getting through the rift from the Apocalypse World.
