Supernatural Season 13 will see more tension between Mary and her boys. What’s the big decision that will lead to this?

We’re counting down the episodes to the Supernatural Season 13 finale now and all eyes are on the Apocalypse World. It’s not surprising that the Winchesters will finally get there or that they’ll find their mom and Jack. However, it’s not going to be as easy as grabbing them and getting them through the rift.

Expect more trouble and tension between Mary and her boys in the season finale, showrunner Robert Singer warns. TV Guide reports that Mary has found a place in the Apocalypse World. Here she can be a pure fighter and it sounds like she’s choosing to stay. That’s not really too surprising since we definitely felt some chemistry between her and Apocalypse Bobby.

However, I have one question: why does she want to be a fighter? Mary wanted to get out of hunting. Sure, we found out she was still actually hunting after her sons were born, but she wanted to get out of the game. She worked with the British Men of Letters to make America safe from the monsters and dirty ghosts of the world. So, why has she now changed her mind?

Going from mother to pure hunter

I suspect that it’s all part of not feeling like she really belonged on Earth in Supernatural Season 12. She was plucked out after her death in the 80s and put straight into 2016. For the last two years, she’s struggled to come to terms with her baby boys being all grown up, living the last three decades without her. It’s not surprising that she distanced herself from them. I couldn’t imagine how I’d feel if that happened to me.

In the Apocalypse World, she seems to have found a home. She gained a connection with Bobby and has spent the last few episodes (offscreen and likely) fighting the angels that have attacked. Mary has had the chance just to be a hunter. She’s in a world that needs her; at least for the time being! But her sons will, understandably, be angry. This time she actually is putting herself before their feelings and hopes and it really isn’t fair. Season 12 I understood. If she makes this choice, I don’t think I can defend her.

Maybe things will change. I suspect Apocalypse Michael will take the fight to the Winchesters’ world. Mary will be forced to cross back over at some point. Unless Sam Smith is actually leaving Supernatural Season 13 and that explains why she kissed Season 13 goodbye.
