Supernatural Season 13 sees the Apocalypse World get the focus it deserves, as the Winchesters and their winged friends go on a mission to save Mary and Jack.

The Winchesters, an angel, and an under-powered archangel walk into the Apocalypse World. It sounds like the start of a bad joke and Dean might agree that it was a bit of a bad joke. Not in terms of the episode, but in terms of events that happened in it.

After a couple of bad weeks, Supernatural Season 13 mostly picked back up to where I expected it to be. The Apocalypse World finally got the attention that it’s deserved for so long, as the Winchesters and their winged friends went on a mission to save Mary and Jack.

Before that could happen, the new Team Free Will 2.0–maybe Team Free Will 2.1?–had to get the rift open. That meant a number of people had to face their fears.

Getting the archangel grace

More from Supernatural

Now that Gabriel is part of Team Free Will 2.0, he’s up for sharing his archangel grace. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough to open a portal, even with Rowena being Leveled Up, so they need the only archangel they have left. Yes, Lucifer.

While Sam tries to argue against bringing Lucifer in, Rowena and Gabriel get a little too close for the Winchesters’ and Castiel’s comfort–is it Rabriel or Growena? I can’t decide. Ignoring everything that’s happened, they create a plan to get Lucifer from the bar he’s drinking his sorrows away in.

With Lucifer back in the bunker, Rowena is able to use his grace to open the portal. Of course, they don’t just want to open the portal for 24 hours, so they slowly drain Lucifer’s grace to keep the doorway open. Off the Winchesters, Gabriel, and Castiel go to save Mary and Jack, leaving Rowena to babysit Lucifer–and get extremely irate at him.

That doesn’t work as planned, of course. Rowena tells Lucifer that his son is in the Apocalypse World, gets him angry, and he attacks her. Rowena is able to push him back but it’s through the rift and into the Apocalypse World.

With no archangel grace, Rowena is about to pack her bags but she decides to stick around. Maybe she can figure out a way to keep the rift open.

The Winchesters and co. fight a bunch of vampires

Meanwhile, in the Apocalypse World, the rest of Team Free Will 2.1 come across a couple of humans heading for Mary and Jack’s camp. They’re being attacked by a strange looking vampire. It turns out angels didn’t care about the monsters and now the monsters are turning primal. That’s really not surprising and there isn’t much time to focus on that.

The nest of vamps is blocking the way to Mary and Jack’s camp, so off everyone goes into the tunnel to kill the vamps and get through. That doesn’t work out as planned either. The way through is blocked, so while Castiel and Gabriel clear the rubble a bunch of vamps attack. Dean can just watch as a couple of vamps take down Sam and bite him in the neck, ripping his artery. Not as shocking as Sam’s death once would have been, but I guess it served the story. This was clearly what Jared Padalecki had hinted at a while ago.

This is the part that gets a little unrealistic. Castiel is able to convince Dean to walk away, as Sam is pulled into the tunnels. There is no way that would happen, but Dean goes off and leads the way to Mary’s camp. When they get there, Gabriel needs to power down the angel sigils (is that really protected against Michael?) and that gets Mary’s attention. It’s a bittersweet family reunion and Jack is definitely not happy with the decision not to bring Sam back.

If only Jack knew what was going on back in the tunnel. Lucifer has stolen angel grace, tracked down Sam, and brought him back. He’ll allow the vamps to kill Sam again unless Sam helps him get Jack back. Of course, Sam chooses life and off they head for Mary’s camp.

The episode wraps with everyone now in Mary’s camp, except Rowena who is still presumably finding a way to keep the rift open.
