When iZombie Season 4 was being written and produced, nobody knew if the series would get another season. Thankfully, the finale could have been the perfect series finale.

It’s always a relief as a fan to know that producers and writers have our backs. When iZombie Season 4 was being written and produced, there was no confirmation from The CW that there would be another season. In fact, it took until May 2018 for the network to finally make a decision (and thankfully renew it for a fifth and final season). However, Rob Thomas and co. planned ahead and made sure the Season 4 finale would have been a perfect series finale.

Caution: There are spoilers in this post.

A sense of closure for all characters

More from CW

Thomas managed to keep the storylines for each of the characters open for a potential fifth season. However, he didn’t leave us with a massive cliffhanger that would have us guessing his plans for that fifth season had it not happened. By the end of iZombie Season 4, there was a sense of closure for many of the characters.

Chase Graves is gone with Major taking his place. Because of this, he’s able to give Blaine a semi-happy ending storyline (although there are questions of whether he deserves it) by making it clear that Blaine and Don-E are needed. Meanwhile, Clive and Dale got married and Liv did the one thing she could to make their love story complete: gave up her chance to be human again so Dale could be. And you could see the emotions from both Dale and Clive as Liv sacrificed her future and her happiness to make them happy. Despite both sacrificing their humanity to be together, it was clear neither of them wanted this.

As for Liv, well, she doesn’t get a perfectly happy ending. Yet again, she had to say a permanent goodbye to her boyfriend. Yes, Levon was killed by the guillotine as many of us feared and expected. However, she’s trying to move on. Just as it looked like her moving on meant giving up being Renegade, everyone else came through to stop her. They showed that humans and zombies can work together under the right leadership.

Meanwhile, Ravi has now lost the brain for his cure (because apparently the whole thing needed to be eaten rather than just a little like the rat needed to eat with no explanation as to why) but he and Peyton are happy together.

For the most part, there’s happiness. We could go off satisfied that there was a brighter future for the walled Seattle.

Yet there’s a storyline for iZombie Season 5

Despite this closure, there are still questions and storylines for a fifth season. After all, not everything was perfect and we didn’t get a complete end to the series.

We just got the start of a new story. This time it’s one that includes hope. The government may have stopped the shipment of brains to New Seattle, but the residents inside the wall aren’t just going to stop. Major has found a way around the situation and he’s doing what is right for all, instead of acting out of fear.

Of course, there are many potential problems. We may have issues from the outside, as there could be a crackdown on the black market trade for brains. There could be issues within Fillmore-Graves with Major now in command (surely not everyone would have been happy about this). Liv’s smuggling operation will still continue. There will be the backlash from the number of murdered zombie cult.

And there is still that question of the cure. Blaine still has the cure. Will Ravi and Liv ever find out to give Ravi the chance to create something? Will Major be able to offer funds to help Ravi create a vaccine or cure that really works?

iZombie Season 4 finale certainly worked as a series finale. I’m thankful that Thomas gave us an ending that would have been satisfying to the story if The CW had canceled it abruptly. But now I’m looking forward to the final season. Seeing this ending gives me hope that the fifth season is going to be epic and the perfect ending to this zom-rom-com.
