Timeless has officially been canceled. It was Eric Kripke’s latest series with a lot of connections to the show we love. Did Supernatural ever face this threat of cancellation?

It’s a sad day for Timeless fans. Eric Kripke’s latest series has been canceled after just two seasons. NBC made the decision just before contracts for the actors would end, making it clear that there would be no more episodes but there may be a two-hour movie. As it’s Kripke’s show, many Supernatural fans are also mourning. Recently, there was also a question about Supernatural: did it ever face the possibilities of cancelation or the treatment from networks?

Sort of…but not quite the same

Supernatural certainly faced potential cancelation at various points in its run. At the end of the second season, there was the chance that the series would be canceled. It didn’t help that this was the first season to air on the new CW network, which had developed after WB and UPN joined. With just 3.14 million viewers on average, the series looked set for cancelation.

However, the series was picked up for another season and got an early renewal for the fourth season, despite low ratings during Supernatural Season 3. The benefit was that The CW was a child of a bigger network, CBS, which meant lower figures were allowed and the network would continue to survive. This continues today, with The CW seeing some of the lowest ratings across the five primetime networks.

Later, Supernatural moved to a Friday night because of low ratings, but actually saw a tick upwards and has now become the longest-running series on the network.

NBC doesn’t have The CW’s luxury

As a parent network of various child networks, NBC doesn’t have the luxury of low ratings. Timeless Season 2 needed to see larger numbers of live viewers. Despite DVR and social ratings being good, the network advertisers wanted the live ratings to be higher. There was always going to be a higher danger of cancelation for Timeless with that in mind.

Hopefully, Kripke’s series will be saved by another network. There’s always the chance that it could be picked up by Netflix or Hulu. Maybe even somewhere like Syfy would see it thrive. However, with the possibilities of a two-hour movie to wrap up the questions, there is definitely a chance nowhere will choose to renew.
