It’s a revolutionary day for Supernatural. Sam and Dean finally get their recognition

Even television shows get to be holidays. Have any Supernatural fans wished they could celebrate Sam and Dean Winchester like the 4th of July or St. Patrick’s day? Now you can, but only in Austin, TX. Thanks to Steve Adler, the mayor of Austin, “Supernatural Day”  is now an official holiday. Two famous Texans, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, had an honored ceremony on Saturday, June 23rd, 2018 for their roles in the cultural phenomenon.

Supernatural already holds the record of being the longest running live-action TV fantasy series in the States and outlived it’s original network. Going on 14 years and one of the first television shows to gain an obsessive fandom in the modern age, it deserves a celebration. It’s a day that proves how powerful fan love can be.

Inspired by the hauntings of Stull Cemetery, the series spent 10 years in development. Creator Eric Kripke, nearly gave up hope until September 13, 2005, when pilot episode finally aired. The tone has changed dramatically since it’s premiere. From a show cast in dark shadows and long dramatic stares, it’s since blurred the lines between dramady and campy horror. Birthing the ship “Destiel”, spawning numerous tie-in novels, two attempts at a spin-off and a short-lived animated version of season 1, it’s become a series capable of impact.

More from Supernatural

In a world of dramatic plots and dark satires, Supernatural tells a a story that’s all heart. Sam and Dean, along with their demon and angel friends, prove time and time again that the only person in control of your own life is you; write your own destiny. In a chaotic world packed with Trumps and mean tweets, it’s nice to hear.

Since season 1, viewers have felt comforted watching two men living traumatic lives refusing to stand down. Even while facing the end of the world. Sam and Dean’s resilience gives us strength. Supernatural  helps people who don’t believe they have the strength to keep fighting. A car, a brother, and yourself are all you need. Supernatural has proven itself to be a fighter by keeping it’s spirit after 14 years, coming out with even more heart than it started with. Each episode has fun plots, great one-liners and plenty of hugs. They’re the reasons we watch, but it’s the unbreakable bonds between family that makes us stay.

You might have missed it this year but wait for 2019 and celebrate with a marathon. Eat apple pie and wear layers of flannel.

Congratulations! We’re proud of you.
