It’s #ThrowbackThursday and that means a chance to look at a Supernatural plot point from the past. This week, it’s a look at Gordon Walker, who’d told Kubrick in Bad Day at Black Rock that Sam wasn’t human. Was this something he really believed?

From the beginning of Gordon’s time on Supernatural, we knew that he wasn’t going to be a character to like. He had a black-and-white view of the monster world, not accepting that some creatures could be good–I’d be interested in his thoughts on humans like The Bender family. We knew that this meant problems for Sammy, who we would later learn had demon blood in him.

In “Bad Day at Black Rock,” Gordon told Kubrick that Sam wasn’t human. It’s not clear how he found this out, which suggests that maybe he didn’t actually know the full truth. He knew that Sam was involved with other Special Children, but how much did he really know about the psychic powers, Azazel, and the Devil’s Gate in Wyoming?

Gordon Walker wanted revenge

More from Supernatural

There’s a high chance he knew very little; his belief of Sam being a monster was just based on a theory. What he really wanted was revenge, since Sam was the reason Gordon had been locked away in prison.

This wouldn’t be the first time Gordon was fueled by revenge. He (like so many other hunters) became a hunter because of revenge. When Gordon’s sister had been killed by a vampire, Gordon wanted to make sure the vampires were killed. That just led to killing other monsters, viewing them all as the same–the reason he’d lost his sister.

Bela had made a point to Dean that being a hunter wasn’t a righteous path. The hunters didn’t save innocent people out of the goodness of their hearts. Bobby and John became hunters because of the death of their wives, Sam got back in the game because of the death of Jess, Dean was technically in the game because of his mom’s death (although he grew up in it too, so felt he had little choice), and many others we’ve met along the way were killed because of the deaths of loved ones. There are very few who do it for the innocent people (like Jody, Alex, and sort of Dean after “What Is and What Should Never Be”).

Gordon wanted revenge for being put in prison and it really is as simple as that. While he may have known something about Azazel’s plan, nobody ever learned the full details. There’s no way that Gordon would have known everything. Telling Kubrick what he did was a way to get another hunter on side.
