Bela Talbot is one of my favorite characters from Supernatural, especially the early years. Since we’re onto Season 3, it’s time to look at why she’s our #WomanCrushWednesday for the week.

I’ve already shared why I liked Bela in Supernatural Season 3. It shouldn’t be that surprising that she’s become the #WomanCrushWednesday for a week. While there are some out there who can’t stand her for various reasons (we are all entitled to our own opinions and I respect that), she’s a character with layers that you’ll see more and more as you watch.

Her circumstances made her the woman she was. Tricked into making a deal with a crossroad demon as an impressionable teenager, she had a decade to make the most of her life. Of course, we met her as that decade was up and she searched for a way to get out of the deal. And this brings me onto the #WCW segment. Just why is she the woman for the week?

She’s resourceful

More from Supernatural

When it comes to Bela, there is one word that will sum her up. She is resourceful. In the nine years before we meet her in Supernatural Season 3, she’d managed to set up a life for herself. Through acquiring items for profit, she was able to stand alone and that’s what she needed. After all, she didn’t want to get close to someone, only to leave them heartbroken when she died.

There was a sense of selflessness within her selfishness. She didn’t mind making enemies because she knew she wouldn’t be around for long enough. And that made her resourceful. She was willing to do what it took to get the job done.

I always try to imagine what I’d be like put in the exact same position as the character. I don’t know if I’d have sold my soul but if I did, then I’d have likely done many of the same things to avoid people grieving for me when I died.

She did what she thought was best

While I’m not sure I would have made the deal, Bela did what she thought was best. We know she suffered from abuse, but never really found out the extent of that abuse. It was bad enough that she thought she needed to sell her soul to get out of an awful situation.

Considering she was only about 14 at the time, she wouldn’t have fully understood the extent of what she was doing. Would she have even thought that the demon was telling the truth? Many people would have brushed the red eyes off as something to do with the light. It would have only been the death of her dad that she realized that she really had sold her soul; that she was going to Hell.

She had a lonely existence

It’s clear that Bela didn’t make friends. She pushed as many people away as possible, yet part of her yearned to have some sort of family or even someone she could turn to and rely on. That became Lilith in Supernatural Season 3, has she believed Lucifer’s first demon would be able to break the deal.

Bela was so lonely and scared about Hell that she was willing to kill the Winchesters, when they may have been able to help her. Considering her circumstances at the time of the deal, they may have actually believed she deserved saving.

She lived with the constant fear and knowledge of what was coming. We met her in that last year, as the deal got closer to the end. Yet, she lived 10 years knowing she was going to Hell and it would have been extremely lonely.

Next: Why Ellen Harvelle is our #WCW

Bela Talbot wasn’t the nicest of characters on the series, but she was a strong woman with a painful backstory. I wish we’d got to know her more in Supernatural Season 3 and I’d love to see her soul return at some point in a meatsuit. This would be one return I could completely accept and I’d be excited about seeing.
