When Bela Talbot was introduced in Supernatural Season 3, there may have been a line that you overlooked. This one line foreshadowed Bela’s character development.

“We’re all going to Hell, Dean. Why not enjoy the ride?” was one of Bela’s lines in Supernatural Season 3, Episode 3. This was the line that would foreshadow everything about her character. However, it’s an easy one to overlook.

When Bela was first introduced, she was viewed as some spoiled brat who used the supernatural world for her own gain. While that was likely the case, there was a deeper story; one that makes her an extremely interesting character. This wasn’t just a storyline developed purely to wrap Bela’s character up after the writer’s strike caused the season to cut short. The storyline was developed from the very beginning.

Bela knew all about Dean’s crossroad deal. She knew the two were going to Hell and this was a hint that she’d made a deal herself at some point in the future. What we wouldn’t learn until later was why and when the deal was made. It would take longer for Dean to realize that Bela’s words were true and specific.

And it’s not just that Bela was going to Hell, but that she knew Dean was, too. That means the storyline with Lilith had to be started from the beginning. After all, Lilith needed Dean to go to Hell to break the first seal–the start of the Supernatural Season 4 storyline.

Eric Kripke has always foreshadowed

It shouldn’t be that surprising that the writers knew Bela’s end-game. Eric Kripke had started the series with the idea of it running for at least three seasons. Later that was developed into a five-season story arc, which told a complete story that started with the brothers searching for their father. The story development wasn’t just for the Winchester brothers but multiple side characters.

Bela’s story was always going to be thought out from start to finish before the season developed. While the details would have needed filling in, the overall idea of her making a deal with a crossroad demon would have been decided. It wouldn’t be surprising if the writers already knew that Bela was going to work with Lilith to make sure Dean was going to Hell.

What Supernatural Season 3 and Bela’s character shows is the detail that Kripke has always gone into for foreshadowing. There are small elements along the way that work into one bigger end-game.
