Box office: A weekend of movie sequels and one dead franchise
By Sandy C.
What movie did you catch in theaters this weekend? Three new films were released, but not all came out winning. The box office numbers are in! Here are the top ten movies of the weekend…
This past Friday saw the release of The Equalizer 2, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, and Unfriended: Dark Web. It’s not tough to guess which movie of the three came out less than successful.
At the top of the box office is The Equalizer 2, the first sequel Denzel Washington stars in. The movie collected $35.8 million, not bad for a summer debut, but only a little over a million better than its predecessor in 2014. Reportedly, Equalizer 2 had a budget of $62 million, so it does have a long way to go for some profit to trickle down.
In second place is the musical Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! The first one had a $27 million weekend, but the sequel did almost $10 million more with $34.3 million. The musical had an even larger budget at $75 million, but it has already surpassed it thanks to international numbers. And while both Mamma Mia 2 and Equalizer 2 would have loved to see more love at the box office, they can’t complain when compared to the third weekend debut, Unfriended: Dark Web.

Fans who went out to watch Dark Web may have just seen the last of the short-lived franchise. The found-footage movies don’t take much money to make, Dark Web‘s budget was reportedly only one million. However, this weekend only made the movie $3.4 million, a lot less than the $15.8 million opening the first movie in the series did.
