Every season, there’s an episode that will take risks and push expectations. That was Supernatural Season 4, Episode 5’s job. It became a real monster movie.

“Monster Movie” is one of those episodes that pushes boundaries and takes risks. It’s certainly not for everyone, but for those who appreciate the black-and-white filming and cheesy horror nostalgia, it’s a favorite. Yes, this recap is all about Supernatural Season 4, Episode 5.

A little fun fact before getting into it. This was the very first episode my husband watched because of me. I knew he’d enjoy the directing and the use of Dracula, so made him watch it and he’s been a Supernatural fan ever since!

So, you may be able to tell that I have a soft spot for this episode. Now onto the recap for “Monster Movie.” In case you don’t remember, this episode was filmed completely in black and white (the risk taken).

It’s time for Oktoberfest

More from Supernatural

Sam and Dean are still a little hung up on the impending apocalypse, but Dean reminds him that they need to have some fun and that means Oktoberfest in Canonsburg. It has all the expectations of Oktoberfest, with polka bands, barmaids dressed in their 16th-century German costumes, and pretzels that are too big to eat.

Of course, they’re not just there for fun. There’s a case and that means they get to pretend to be FBI. They need to find a victim with two fang bites on her neck. Clearly a vampire but not the type of vampire the Winchesters are used to. Whatever could it be?

It doesn’t help that the only witness shares that the monster was definitely a vampire–of the Dracula character kid. However, Dean has other things on his mind. He’s realized that he doesn’t have the scars he once had after being pulled from the pit. That must mean he’s a virgin again and he needs to fix that.

The case of a werewolf?

That night, there’s another attack. This time it’s a werewolf, complete with hairy arms, a furry face, and torn-up pants. This isn’t the type of werewolf the Winchesters have dealt with before, but it’s clear there’s a case. One thing that really puzzles the Winchesters is that the heart is still there.

Another case involves an Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus left on the dock. A mummy climbs out and attacks the night watchman, killing him. To make matters worse, it turns out the sarcophagus was just a prop and there was dry ice at the bottom.

When Dean heads back to meet with his “bar wench,” Jamie, he finds her being attacked by Dracula. Yes, Dracula! With the slick black hair, fanged teeth, and black cape. He even calls Jamie “Mina,” insisting that she be her bride. When Dracula sees Dean, he calls him “Mr. Harker” before rushing off…on a scooter.

It’s a shapeshifter!

After all that, Dean figures out that they are dealing with a shapeshifter and one that’s clearly watched too many monster movies. Talk about pop culture in Supernatural Season 4, Episode 5!

Sam realizes that this shifter must know Jamie and wants her, which leads to Jamie suspecting Ed, the first witness. We get the opposite of “Heart,” with Sam going to investigate and Dean staying with the girl.

Dean has the chance to admit that saving people and living the life he does is awesome and more of a mission for him. Just as Dean and Jamie start kissing, Lucy, another “bar wench” walks in and sticks around for a drink. It turns out she was the shapeshifter all along and she knocks out Dean.

Dean wakes up tied to a board in the mad scientist’s basement. He’s dressed in lederhosen and the board is connected to a generator. Lucy has become Dracula again and says that this time the monster will win and get the girl.

Fortunately, Sam is able to figure out the truth, find the house, and rescue Dean and then Jamie. Sam is referred to as “Van Helsing” in this monster movie and it just so happens that Sam is the one to fire silver bullets at Dracula to kill him.
