Better Call Saul season 4, episode 7 recap: Here’s Saul
Better Call Saul shows us more of Jimmy’s budding side business as he’s finally taken on the Saul moniker in a more official way.
Better Call Saul uses a split screen to catch us up on the lives of Kim and Jimmy. Jimmy is officially going by Saul according to his new business cards for his cell phone business. Meanwhile, Kim gets a new office and gets to work on her cases. Even when the two are together, the screen stays split.
Days pass with the split screen view and we see Kim finally get her cast off. For the most part, their lives look pretty normal. Jimmy’s day-to-day is admittedly is a bit more sketchy, but that’s fairly normal for him anyway.
Jimmy looks at an office four blocks from the courthouse with Huell. Huell isn’t all that impressed with it and Jimmy probably isn’t either after he sees Kim’s office. He goes a little overboard at the company party by suggesting that the company retreat should be in Aspen, CO and that they should charter a jet for it. The employees love the idea, but you can tell that Rick wasn’t looking to put up that kind of cash for it. A somewhat uncomfortable ride home ensues after the party.

The next we see of Jimmy (as Saul) is when he’s selling his phones out of the back of a van. He has the persona down with his track suit and gold chain. An officer walks up to him to tell him that drug dealers are using his phones and to ask him to stop. Huell walks up with headphones and clocks the cop over the head with his bag. His facial expression is priceless when Jimmy informs him that he just hit a cop.
It turns out that Huell had been picked up by that same cop three years prior, which really doesn’t bode well for him. They’re shooting for 2 1/2 years for his sentence. Huell wants to bounce, but Jimmy wants to fix it for him. Jimmy’s bright idea is to enlist Kim for the job, but she won’t do it his way. I love that even for Jimmy, Kim won’t stop doing things her way in this instance. She could easily do what Jimmy suggests, but she’ll look for a different way so she doesn’t unnecessarily smear someone who made some mistakes in his past.
Kim calls Huell after her unpleasant encounter with ADA Suzanne Ericsen. She has some harsh words about Jimmy, and it’s unclear if she knows that Kim is dating him. Huell is going to have to go to jail for a bit and Kim never seems confident that Jimmy will back her up on that. She calls him after she fills a cart full of school supplies and tells him that she has a better way.
Hector is awake now and he’s working with Dr. Bruckner on his motor skills. He knocks his water over though just to stare at the nurse as she bends over to clean it up. This really wasn’t surprising at all. Dr. Bruckner makes a house call to Gus and shows him the progress that Hector is making and knocking the cup over stands out to Gus right away.
We then learn that Gus had a hand in the construction of a new clinic for Dr. Bruckner. You can tell that he doesn’t really want Hector to get better when he tells Dr. Bruckner that they should temper their expectations. She’s a bit suspicious of that and rightfully so.
Mike’s keeping an eye on the “construction” crew as they head to a laundry service warehouse. They head underground and one of the men knocks over one of the supporting poles. Mike has to yell at them to get them back in line. Back at their home base, Mike has a friendly chat with Werner.
As the episode goes through these three different storylines, we don’t see how they’re tying together just yet. Obviously Gus is tied to two of them, but Hector Salamanca is in no condition to return to his former position of power just yet. Kim is the one person left in the show who seems to actually want to do the right thing for the right reason. Sure, Mike has his reasons for making money the way he does, but that isn’t quite the same.
Kim continues to shine in this show and it wouldn’t be remotely the same without her. Jimmy doesn’t need to be the most interesting character for this show to be at its best. With a few more episodes left in the season, I’m looking forward to seeing where they take Saul as Jimmy is becoming him more each day. I’m also looking forward to how Kim continues to react to everything Jimmy does.
Better Call Saul airs on Mondays on AMC at 9:00 PM.
