It feels like it’s been a long summer, but the fall is finally here. Tonight kicks off the 9-1-1 Season 2 premiere and the season is already intense.

9-1-1 was one of FOX’s biggest midseason shows and now it’s being promoted to the fall. Summer is over and we finally have a chance to catch up on where our first responders are in their lives. The 9-1-1 Season 2 premiere airs straight after tonight’s NFL double-header and here’s how you can watch it live.

Let’s be honest, there are a few characters you need to know more about. The first season left us with a heartbroken Buck. After her mother’s death, Abby (Connie Britton) chose to live her life and go traveling. She wanted to live the dreams she always had. Poor Buck is still going to be heartbroken going into the first season (look out for my interview with Oliver Stark about Buck tomorrow) and is living in Abby’s apartment.

There is a light for him, though. His estranged sister, Maddie, played by the effervescent Jennifer Love Hewitt, is coming back into his life. How will Buck take to his sister returning? Will he open his arms to her? They haven’t seen each other in three years, so things are going to be tense but this is Buck. He always sees the best in people, right?

Meanwhile in the 9-1-1 Season 2 premiere, Angela Bassett’s Athena is questioning her relationship with Bobby, played by Peter Krause). We left them going on a date after that horrific motorcycle accident–I’m not going to lie; that had me in tears–but now it’s time to get out of the honeymoon period and face life. Can the two make it?

I’m totally rooting for the two of them to be together. They both have their baggage but are also kind, generous, and supportive of each other. Despite different denominations of faith, they have similar views and Athena was there for Bobby when he needed her the most.

And then there’s Aisha Hinds’ Hen, who is trying to make things work with her wife. The problem is her ex is still in the picture and going to make this custody battle as hard as possible. Hen made some mistakes last season, but can she move past them in 9-1-1 Season 2?

Within all that is the work. An earthquake is going to hit Los Angeles and that means everyone is going to need their game face on. Can Maddie cope on her first day with hundreds of people calling in? Will the team work together and support each other as L.A. panics? We’ll have to wait to find out.

9-1-1 Season 2 premiere is a two-parter spread over two nights. We’re getting a one-off episode tonight and then it will move back into its usual 9/8c timeslot tomorrow night. Here are the promo and synopsis to get an idea of what to expect.
