The Gifted: Grace Byers says Reeva Payge isn’t the villain
We’re always looking for the next villain in superhero shows. Reeva Payge isn’t your typical villain The Gifted Season 2. In fact, Grace Byers doesn’t think she is at all.
The Gifted Season 2 opened to the new “villain” in town. After the end of Trask Industries and Dr. Campbell in the Season 1 finale, there needed to be a new person to be completely against. Reeva Payge has become that character, but Grace Byers (who plays the character) doesn’t believe Reeva is the villain everyone thinks.
During an interview at NYCC 2018, Grace explained that Reeva doesn’t just kill for the sake of it. She doesn’t view what Reeva did in that first episode as murder but more of a sacrifice. The Inner Circle members who didn’t agree with her have sacrificed their lives for a better world for mutants.
Of course, Sean Teale has previously said that Eclipse believes the Inner Circle’s view is shortsighted and that may be just what The Gifted viewers believe after the first three episodes of the second season. However, Grace didn’t comment on that. She just made it clear that Reeva has her reasons and we’ll hopefully see what those reasons are as time goes on.

A little discussion of diversity also came up. For those who don’t know, Reeva Payge is a white blonde woman in the comic books. The Gifted series decided to cast a black actress to play the role. It’s been a bold and positive decision to make and Grace has impressed me, personally, in her skill and style.

During the interview, Grace also discussed her favorite parts, especially coming off Empire and heading into the comic world. She shared her research and making this character her own.
The Gifted doesn’t really have any villains in a way. Everyone has their own opinion about mutants and what they want from the world. Reeva is one of those that is passionate about her goals and will do what it takes to see them through.
