With the second episode of Supernatural Season 14 almost upon us, it’s time to quickly look back at the premiere. What were the best moments from the episode that Episode 2 needs to beat?

Supernatural Season 14, Episode 1 offered a strong start. A few loose ends were tied up, a couple of questions answered, and plenty of more twists added to the pile. With the second episode almost here, it’s time to quickly look back at the best moments from the episode.

You’ll probably be able to guess one of them since I wrote a whole post about it. In fact, I’ll start with that one–it’s, by far, my favorite moment but because it’s so obvious I need to start with it. I’ll follow with four that you may be surprised about.

5. Leader!Sam stepping up to the plate

See, you guessed it, right? I think this was a favorite for a lot of people. We’ve spent years watching Dean take the lead and Sam following along.

Supernatural Season 12 gave us a glimpse of what Sam could be like but then we never saw it again. The 14th season has finally given us everything we wanted. Now I just hope that it sticks around.

The best moment of all was when Sam was able to give out instructions and give out orders despite running on fumes. He kept a level head and that’s never easy to do. While he looked annoyed, he didn’t look completely out of his comfort zone, showing us exactly what is to come for this character.

4. Mary showing her fears

Mary is the optimist of the season. We seem to get one every single season. Last season Sam and Dean took turns and this season we get to see where they got that from.

But it wasn’t Mary being the optimist that I loved. It was finally seeing a side to Mary that we haven’t seen yet. Season 12 she was off figuring out the world and I got that. In fact, I loved that the writers put that in; that she didn’t just blindly accept everything and just immediately want to spend time with her sons that were six months and four years the last time she saw them.

Season 13 had a rocky patch, but Supernatural Season 14 is the chance to see her as a loving mother. And we got that in the car. That scene between her and Sam was full of honesty, of fear, and of a little bit of hope.

She wasn’t apologetic for her mindset. As annoying as she may be, she can’t go to the dark place. Again, her sons are very much like her.

3. Sam getting rid of Kip

Most of the time, we see Sam as the damsel in distress. With no Dean around, we’re seeing a very different Sam Winchester. This character now has time to develop.

That’s exactly what we got towards the very end. I loved the whole fight scene with the fast-mo, slow-mo focus. It was a risky decision in filming and one, for me, that worked.

However, it was the final moment. After killing Kip, Sam stops everyone in their tracks. He makes it very clear that there will be no more Kings of Hell. He will stop every last one of them.

This is slightly different to him being a leader. In this moment, he proves himself as a hunter and as a savior of mankind. He will do what it takes to protect the world.

2. Bobby and Jack training

Hearing that Jack was going back to hunter basics was awesome. It was even better knowing that Bobby would train Jack. This makes sense.

It’s been a long time since we’ve had this sort of relationship on screen. While Sam and Dean have taught Castiel a lot, ever since Bobby’s death, we’ve lost that mentor/mentee relationship. It’s back in spades with Jack learning to fight from Bobby.

What was even better was seeing more of Apocalypse Bobby. We got a few glimpses here and there in Supernatural Season 13, but this has been the first real chance to see him a little more relaxed instead of waiting for an angel to attack.

1. Michael!Dean’s new plan revealed

We knew that Michael!Dean would want to develop a world that was his view of paradise. Throughout the episode, he asked people what they wanted and would easily be able to tell if they were being honest or not.

There were questions about whether Michael would save the angels, but it’s now clear that likely isn’t going to happen. It’s not that he doesn’t want to play God up there. It’s more the fact that he doesn’t like the Winchester!World angels.

He wants an army of followers with pure desires. Seeing at the end what he actually means was interesting and exciting. He’s building an army of monsters. This gives hope that we’ll see more of the old-school monsters we haven’t had for a long time on the series.
