Back in Supernatural Season 5, Gabriel pointed out similarities between Dean and Michael. It seems like the Apocalypse World Michael is just the same.

Remember when Gabriel pointed out that Dean and Michael were very much the same? Supernatural Season 14 sees more of that, especially with the way Andrew Dabb recently phrased a point.

During TVLine’s “Ask Ausiello” segment, the discussion of whether God or Amara would return came up. This led to Dabb sharing more about what the apocalypse was all about in the fifth season. For Michael, it was a way to make God come back; to get him to care.

In the Apocalypse World, this is also why Michael went through with the apocalypse and killing Lucifer. A lot of lore points out that Lucifer was God’s favorite son, despite Michael being the loyalist of all. Killing Lucifer was sure to get a rise out of the omnipotent being, but it ended up doing nothing.

Michael certainly has his daddy issues and it speaks to Dean’s personality. For years, we’ve seen Dean struggle with his daddy issues. In the first season, everything he did was to get his dad’s attention, even if he wouldn’t admit to it. Gabriel had always said that Dean was the soldier for dad, just like Michael, and their daddy issues are very much the same.

Both Winchester and archangel have suffered a father who isn’t there for them. In fact, their dads are there for everyone else but them. The difference between them is that Michael acts out. He goes through with the apocalypse and destroys humans as a way to get a rise out of God and it doesn’t work. Meanwhile, Dean continues to save people, because he wants to make his dad proud and knows that the world needs him.

It’s interesting to see more similarities between the two characters, but also the tiny elements that make them completely different. Dean is loyal and he is kind (some of the time, anyway). He wants to get rid of the monsters, demons, and dirty archangels as much as possible. He wanted that knowing he wouldn’t get his dad’s attention, although did get praise after his dad’s death.
