Supernatural Season 14 has delivered us a stronger and more confident Sam Winchester. How can the showrunners and writers make sure this development continues?

Freeform may do the 25 Days of Christmas, but at SPN Hunters we’re doing the 25 Days of Sam-mas. Similarly to last year’s Cas-mas, this is a time to look at Sam Winchester and for Day #18, it’s all about the development he’s had in Supernatural Season 14.

With Dean taken over by Michael, Sam had no choice but to step up as a leader of the new hunters. It’s been a positive experience for viewers so far, as Sam has often been the one left out in the cold when it comes to consistent development. Now it’s time for the showrunners and writers to keep things going for Sammy.

More from Supernatural

What can they do to make sure he remains this stronger and more confident Sam? How can they make sure he remains the leader he’s set himself out to be? Here are three ways Sam’s development can continue.

1. Focus on his leadership of the Apocalypse World hunters

I know not many people like the bunker being so full. I’ve enjoyed seeing more hunters working together and looking out for each other. With the hunters more organized, it’s going to be safer and easier to take down all the monsters and dirty ghosts in the world. Plus, it’s given Sam a group that he can lead.

This needs to continue. So far, we’ve seen the hunters take on traits that are similar to the British Men of Letters. They work in pairs, have check-in times, and run missions by their commanding officer (Sam). It’s clear that Sam is a Legacy and there are so many more good Men of Letters traits that he can use.

So, to see more of Sam as the stronger and more confident character, we need to see him around the people who have helped him become that. With Michael in control of Dean again, there is this chance to see more of Sam managing the Apocalypse World hunters.

2. More thinking on the spot

Sam isn’t a stupid person. We’ve seen multiple times throughout Supernatural that Sam is smart. Just look at the times he’s thrown theories around and put them to the test because they’re the only things anyone can think of.

He’s done reverse exorcisms, managed to get rid of a racist truck, and figured out the creature of the week more times than not. This Sam has been missing for a while on the show. How many times have we laughed at the silly mistakes he’s made that he really shouldn’t have, like blowing on the paper to try to put the fire out?

Give us the Smart!Sam back. Show us that confident man who is willing to put his theories to the test. It’s time we got to see him because it’s been far too long.

There have been hints of that this year. He’s led the Apocalypse World hunters and given us signs of the smart man that he is. Despite the British Men of Letters being “evil,” Sam put his feelings towards them aside and used their knowledge to his advantage. Now it’s time to use it even more and figure out what’s good and what’s not.

Hopefully, we’ll get to see some of that in the next episode. There’s a chance, right?

3. Let Sam lead in the field

While we’ve seen Sam lead in the bunker, he’s not had the chance to lead in the field that much. We first got a glimpse of his abilities here in the Supernatural Season 12 penultimate episode, when he led Jody and a group of other hunters in a small incursion against the British Men of Letters.

Sam was confident and capable. It was clear that this is something he was born to do. After all, he would have needed to be confident in a courtroom had he continued his journey to become a lawyer. So, it only makes sense that he’d be able to do it all in the middle of the field.

Give us more of this leader by putting him back in the field. It doesn’t even need to be a large group. Seeing him lead Castiel, Jack, Maggie, Mary, Bobby, and maybe one other hunter would be good. Him leading Mary and Bobby would be awesome considering they’re older than him and (in Mary’s case) more experienced. It puts Sam to the test.

And when we do get Dean back, we need to see Sam continue to lead in the field. Let him call the shots more. Dean is proud of his brother, so let him remain proud and see everything Sam can do.
