Supernatural came back with a hard-hitting winner in Nihilism. The midseason return brought us a lot of answers, serious action, throwbacks, new things to worry about, and a little bit of (definitely temporary) resolution.

As usual, Supernatural did not disappoint, but hand to Chuck, this one hit it out of the park. With Episode 10 bringing us back from what felt like months without our beloved characters and story, a lot of the mysteries we’ve been pacing around about found footing.

Beware the spoilers, guys! I was so blown away by this episode, I could not wait to sit down and hash out the top five moments. It’s always hard to pick a few but this week, way more challenging than ever. For me, it wasn’t since we were left with Sam about to free Lucifer from the church floor hole that I remember feeling the anxiety of waiting for the next episode like I did with this one.

When we left for the break, Michael!Dean had done the snap heard ’round Kansas City and left us all wondering how our group of heroes would save the world from Hitomi tower. Well, that mystery was solved super fast and in a way I certainly didn’t expect.

Leave it to our Supernatural geniuses to come up with a little dangling tidbit many episodes ago that set the stage for this scene. Sam called up Jessica, their little supervisor, and got a lot more than he bargained for. Apparently, they have shifts now, because the Winchesters have become a full-time job for the supervising reapers

I was really wondering how they’d get back to the bunker with Michael!Dean in tow as we saw in the teaser, but teleportation honestly never crossed my mind. Bravo, Supernatural geniuses.

If you haven’t quite wrapped your head around what happened in “Nihilism” yet, take a second to go back over everything in our SPN Hunters review of the episode. I will tell you though, the scenes in this episode were so everything that the internet exploded.

#5 Jack did that

Well, it had to happen. I talked about it as soon as we had the information that it was a potential issue because, for me, it seemed like the most obvious thing for Supernatural to do. I did suspect it would take a little bit longer, but right away, Jack did find a reason to tap into his power. The questions I have now are a little more specific.

First of all, can I get a hell yeah for that scene? Jack took us right back to the old days of “You’re hurting my friends!” when he stood in the bunker, watching the monsters come for his peeps. His old feelings came barrelling through and he was going to do something this time, darn it! That was my main idea for why he’s tap into the soul-sucking magic.

Yes, he vaporized those suckers. With “just a thought,” as Castiel once said he could, he just took those guys out and the mega problem was simply gone.

Now I am left wondering two things. First, was that the soul-sucking magic, or his own? Could he be healing or repaired?

It leaves us to wonder, especially since he’s been warned not to use his magic since they think it would be taking away whispers of his soul. How can he know the difference? When Castiel was lecturing him about what he did, he was every bit the baby-minded Jack we know and love. No signs of soulless Jack at all.

Beyond that, assuming it was the soul-sucking magic, what now? Did it sap his soul? What will it mean? Will he do it again? He did promise not to, but he also promised not to in the first place. We shall see.

#4 Michael’s new plan

As always the rule, the villain states his plan for all the world to see. In fact, we saw Sam doing a lot of that in this episode and in the last. I thought it was pretty funny when Michael!Dean sat chained and said, “I can hear you…”

Lots of explaining going on. In this case, though, it seemed to have a dual purpose. Not only did Michael explain to Castiel what he plans to do now that he is captured and his little Kansas City changeover was thwarted, but he also gave him a story of why.

Castiel had previously said to Jack that he shouldn’t believe anything Michael said, but he sure seemed to be taking the bait when Michael stated his theory. I always say Supernatural makes no unnecessary references, just like how Jessica’s earlier introduction and presence just explained itself a lot more, ages later in the story. And the same may be true of Michael’s words to Castiel, as he made that reference that he lies.

Michael stated that Chuck is a writer at heart. This meant that all of these alternate universes are nothing more than drafts, and when he gets bored or decides to start over, he takes off. Castiel seemed perplexed by that idea but seemed to be taking the bait a little bit.

Michael’s M.O. is certainly to diminish the self-esteem and trust among the group, so who knows if we can trust his new plan explanation or not. It sure looked like Castiel was having some doubts about his Dad after the conversation.

Michael planning to hunt Chuck down from dimension to dimension is a new biggie. He said “even God can die,” implying that was his intention. Now we will likely see Castiel have new motivation to end Michael over trapping him, knowing his creator is his clear target. I have to wonder how Amara and Chuck might also feel about this, considering they must know what’s going on by now.

Perhaps the teaser we received about Jaycie Dotin joining the show for a guest appearance as a long thought lost character may have something to do with this new storyline. Either way, I’m certain it’s going to be cause for stronger action than keeping Michael trapped in Dean’s walk-in cooler mind cage.

#3 Poughkeepsie

Well yeah, so Castiel and Sam end up inside of Dean’s head, courtesy of a mind connecting “science project,” as Michael!Dean called it. Once inside, it looked just like The Empty with all the traces of Dean’s Supernatural traumas whispering and flitting around them. Once they figured out where Dean was likely stashed, in a scenario Sam recognized immediately as fake, they headed over and found him in Rocky’s Bar.

Oh my gosh. When I saw this place the first time, I was like, “wait.. is that…” and it kept happening like that through all of the scenes in the bar. The outstanding level of Supernatural Easter eggs, tributes, throwbacks, and references contained in that bar completely blew my mind. It is enough to fill an entire post of its own.

More from Supernatural

When Sam and Castiel got there, they saw it immediately, as well. They knew Michael had buried Dean in a memory he wouldn’t want to leave and that was his big plan to keep him from fighting back.

And it was working. Sam tried talking to Dean and telling him he was trapped by Michael, but Dean shrugged it off as nonsense.

It wasn’t until Sam had the brainstorm idea of saying the codeword that Dean has burned in his brain that Dean finally had a breakthrough and we got to see a menagerie of flashbacks as he recalled everything. When he said, “I remember,” I was like, “oh, phew!”

Again though, I feel we are seeing so many quick resolutions to things that really could be drawn out and still hold our attention. I assume this is an effort to give us as much of the full storyline we’re used to while working with a season that is notably shorter than usual. I’m down.

Anyway, the codeword did its magic and what a brilliant idea again from the Supernatural folk. One day, when I grow up, I hope I am that awesome.

I also wonder if “funkytown” would have had the same kind of effect. Clearly, Sam wanted to cut to the chase and make sure Dean knew, “drop everything and RUN.” Good call Samuel.

#2 “Except one”

Well, holy crap. Apparently, the books in Death’s library can change. That’s new and useful information, sure to show itself again in the Supernatural future. For now, we’re just gonna ignore that and assume that this new set of books is final and unchangeable because that’s what’s what in the storyline.

Billie was pretty concerned that every single book on all the shelves of Dean’s existence and ending have changed to Michael escaping Dean’s mind cage and destroying the world. Except one. One that caused her to break her unbreakable rules and intervene. Now we know how and why they got Mr. Spocked out of Hitomi Tower with Michael in tow.

I’m pretty interested in this and we will find out a lot, if not everything, in the next episode, according to the teaser trailer. Dean clearly says, “this is the only way,” presumably in relation to whatever it is he’s seen building.

And also in that teaser, Mary is seen talking to Sam, Sam is looking surprised, and Mary is also flipping through a book with a very alarmed look on her face. I presume it’s the book and her discovery of it is what will lead Sam to come to stop Dean.

We could see just in one clip that something is definitely decided about Dean and he’s not quite himself. Sam knows it.

We also see Nick is showing up in this next episode, and I have to say, he seems a little like the old Nick, as in Lucifer!Nick. I don’t know.. maybe the book has Lucifer taking out Michael in revenge and Dean has to get him back in business. Just spitballing..

Billie just gives Dean the book and he leaves us with a simple, “what am I supposed to do with this?” Now, we can safely assume that whatever’s in that book, the only way to not have the world destroyed because of him, is something absolutely ridiculous to him. He’s like, “um, yeah, and?” But he does take it and she seems to expect he will do the thing.

So ugh! What’s in the book? I’m not the only one who wants to know. Everyone was asking the same question, and I’m sure that was the intent. Well done, again, Supernatural.

#1 Dean vs Dean

OMG. What in the name of Heaven, Hell, and Supernatural did I just see? Of all the gin joints in all the minds, he had to walk into… his own? I was so completely done after I saw this scene. I saved it for number one with excellent reason.

I mean, early on in the season, Jensen Ackles asked us to have patience with his portrayal of Michael. He said that it changed a lot as it went on, but holy Chuck, this was above and beyond. And I’m not the only one who thought so! Back and forth, back and forth, fighting as two different characters, with two completely different demeanors, postures, moves, what did we just see?

Yes, my friends, Twitter died that day. That’s it, folks, pack up set, there’s nothing else to see. No cause for nominations, no voting please, no discussion about who is the man. On top of the already exceptional work of everyone involved with Supernatural, I have just not seen such a display as this in… I don’t even know.

I just can’t even. All the sayings, all the memes. This was my favorite thing in a long time. And it wasn’t just the one fight scene. From the moment he strolled into Rocky’s Bar after “Poughkeepsie” did the trick, Jensen Ackles stunned us all with his dual role portrayal. My word, that must have been so mentally trying.

And it wasn’t just Jensen, either. Everyone was in this crazyland scenario and was playing roles from the start of the encounter. Sam and Castiel were not really sure how to handle Dean’s misunderstanding of reality and they had to sort of play back and forth while they engaged in the weird loop.

I also really loved that Dean realized that Michael was just another figment of his imagination in there and this was Dean’s bar and Dean’s brain. It was this wonderful “Labyrinth” situation. Like, “I’m offering you your dreams!” all the way up to the “You have no power over me!” moment. And boom, with a few unforgettable exchanges, Michael found himself in deep-freeze. “I am the cage,” said Dean. And there he shall stay. Until…
