Supernatural Episode 300 was nothing but epic and the ratings agree. Both audience and demo metrics were the highest of the season.

Who didn’t love Supernatural Episode 300? While I still believe that keeping John Winchester a secret would have made it far more spectacular but announcing his return would have been good for the views. Ratings are in and they’re the best of the season.

According to TV Series Finale, there was a 17% uptick in the total audience and a 28% uptick in the demo rating, taking them to 1.641 million and 0.5 respectively. Both of these figures are season highs, with the closest being Episodes 2 and 8.

Does this mean the show did the right thing by sharing John Winchester would return? It certainly looks the case. Those who had fallen away from the show would have had a reason to come back. Many wanted to see how John’s return would work and what it would be like to get a full family reunion.

Specials tend to have higher ratings. Fans who would usually watch delayed will tune in live to experience the episode with others. Something similar happened with the Wayward Sisters backdoor pilot and with “ScoobyNatural” last season.

Like previous specials, we can likely expect a decrease in the live + same date ratings next week. That doesn’t mean fans don’t want to tune in for the show but that they’re back to tuning in afterward. These ratings don’t take the delayed viewings into account.

What will be interesting is whether the show’s hashtag makes it to the Nielsen Top 10 weekly ratings. There were plenty of tweets, but a lot of people were using #SPN300 or #Supernatural300 instead of the official hashtag, so that could cause problems. It would be nice to see this awesome special get the social recognition it deserved.
