The Walking Dead: A demonstration of hypocrisy by The Whisperers’ leader was quite a bold move. However, will this cause the new threat to rethink Alpha’s role as leader?

The Walking Dead “Bounty” episode was a good demonstration of The Whisperers methods. The kinds of inhumane things they are willing to do may only be the tip of the ice berg, however, the sacrificial baby caused the icy waters from the ice berg’s tip to recede tremendously.

In the last article, I had compared Fear The Walking Dead’s Daniel Salazar to Alpha. But it seems there are levels that some of the terrible characters would not cross. I would say a baby is pretty much the end-all, be-all ultimate form of inhumane method of getting what they want. Salazar tortured an adult soldier, but there’s something about sacrificing innocence to the walkers that is highly disturbing. Also, Carol has a shared experience regarding Alpha’s past, but I think The Whisperer’s leader is quite unhinged.

A twist of hypocrisy on the part of Alpha?

You have to wonder if this action on the part of Alpha has been done before. Is it standard operating procedure to give up crying infants to the dead? I would think it would be hypocritical that Alpha decided to save her daughter, but sacrifice her follower’s child. You’d think eventually, like Lydia, The Whisperers would think this course of action would not compute, right?

As an audience member, you could probably wonder about the mother Whisperer, mouth agape, gazing at Alpha for a sympathetic response. But it wound up to be a response of sociopathic  tendencies. It seems Samantha Morton’s character’s action is due in part of some kind of warped philosophy since the onset of the zombie apocalypse.

Of course, you have to wonder, if like Negan’s Saviors, she may have those who silently oppose her. However, they could likely feel silenced by fear. Perhaps Alpha’s right hand man, Beta, is their enforcer?

Will Lydia’s exposure to Hilltop sway The Whisperers’ moral compass?

Just like in real life, I would suppose art does imitate life. There are both good and bad people in the world and just like Negan’s Saviors, there are good ones out there. Enid’s boyfriend is a demonstration of that, so why not The Whispers? The Walking Dead has shown plenty of examples of peoples’ moral compasses being swayed.

There’s nothing like a sheltered girl’s experience in a new environment that can shake things up a bit. Lydia was a component of that and with her falling for Henry, this whole experience probably convinced her that her mother was wrong. Daryl saw the influence Alpha had on Lydia, but would throwing her back into Whisperer circulation influence the rest of that horrid group?

I couldn’t help but to think back to a time where the Saviors were introduced, with a Dwight-focused story unfolding. The Savior he was chasing down was a former follower that had gone AWOL and upon approaching him witnessed a tired and weary man who simply couldn’t stand living the life of Negan’s community. The man would rather his life be extinguished than to live like that and I couldn’t help but think that a few more Whisperers may crack and rebel.

This made me think that upon Lydia’s return to The Whisperers that she may influence a few others by relaying her experience coming from a compassionate and flourishing community. It’s happened before with people growing a conscious in other communities, so it would be interesting how this will all play out with a leader that’s more psychotic than Negan. Even he had line of morality in the sand.

The Walking Dead: Will Carol face-off with Alpha and be equally as merciless?. dark. Next

The Walking Dead season nine episodes air every Sunday night at 9 p.m. EST on AMC. Do you think The Whisperers will have a long way to go before their tolerance, if any, wear out under the leadership of Alpha? Do you think Lydia’s experience with Hilltop will influence the new threat?
