On last night’s episode of Gotham, Jim Gordon continues to try and keep the peace in Gotham City, in hopes that they will be reunified with the mainland soon. But his plans are derailed when he’s shot, hallucinating a courtroom accusing him of all those crimes he’s committed on Earth. What does he have to be guilty of?

Previously on Gotham, after Jeremiah poisoned the Gotham river Jim is told that reunification with the mainland will not be possible until the contamination is repaired and the city is pacified. Meanwhile, Barbara and Lee have to deal with having each other in Jim’s life as the baby’s due date draws closer.

Last night, Jim Gordon’s life hangs in the balance, figuratively and literally, during a trial of all the sins he’s committed to those around him. What does he have to feel guilty about, and what is the sentence?

The trial of Jim Gordon

We open the episode with Jim going off on another mission, this time to try and convince all the gangs of Gotham to a detente so that the city can reunify with the mainland and get some much-needed supplies. Lee reminds him that this sort of cavalier behavior is exactly why she’s wary of staying with him because he’s always putting himself in harm’s way to save others. Even if it means endangering or hurting those who care about him.

Ignoring Lee’s pleas, Jim heads over to Penguin’s pad and points out to the gangs that they and the city cannot survive on their dwindling supplies. Without reunification, he says, they’re die off, so a cease-fire is the only way to ensure that everyone survives. The gangs all seem into the idea, but the discussion is cut off when an unknown shooter hits Jim in the stomach.

Harvey and the squad get Jim back to the GCPD where Lee stitches him back up, imploring him to fight. During all this, though, Jim hallucinates that he is in a courtroom being judged for all his crimes.

He’s being prosecuted by another version of himself, who accuses Jim causing so much pain to those around him in the service of wanting to be a hero. Prosecutor Gordon calls witnesses to testify whether their lives have been better or worse with Gordon alive.

First up is Dr. Lee Tompkins, who admits that Jim has caused a lot of her suffering, including killing her former fiancee, causing her to lose her pregnancy, and leading her to a life of crime. The prosecution also calls the victims of the Haven bombing, who remind Gordon of all the harm he’s caused to people who depended on him. The judge eventually renders a guilty verdict, sentencing Jim to die while he is, in reality, clinging to life on Lee’s operating table.

At Jim Gordon’s wake, we see all the criminals – including few old faces like the Pig – celebrating Jim’s demise. Jim also encounters Will, the young boy who Jim took a shine to and gave his badge, but later was killed at Haven. Jim says he tried his best to help people like Will but Will responds that Gordon’s best never seems good enough. As this happens, Jim appears to die on the table in real life.
