Wow! What an episode Supernatural Season 14, Episode 18 was! While we got some answers to questions from the previous episode, we were left with other questions. Did that death really happen and are two people together in Heaven?

Supernatural Season 14, Episode 18 was one emotionally charged episode. There was a death but it wasn’t the actual death that broke our hearts. It was the writing for “Absence.” Robert Berens did a tremendous job — as usual! Whenever I see him as the writer as an episode, I’m immediately excited as he is so consistent with the characters.

But I do have questions. And that’s a good thing. One thing I’ve come to learn is that we can’t trust the angels. I’m not even sure we can trust something Castiel has seen with his own eyes in Heaven.

And this is the point that I get into those spoilers in the title. If you haven’t watched the episode yet, you will need to watch first, read the recap, or just prepare to have the ending spoiled. It’s up to you!

So, I have two main questions from the episode. Supernatural Season 14, Episode 17 left me wondering what had happened to Mary Winchester. I’d already wondered whether she would be killed off by the end of Season 14 and it seemed to happen at the end of Episode 17. But it felt a little anticlimactic for such an important character.

Well, it turns out that Mary was killed after all. Her body was completely and utterly destroyed. But Jack knew for certain that he’d killed Mary and he was so upset about it that he decided to try to bring her back.

While the death may have seemed anticlimactic at first, it was clear that this wasn’t about the actual death. It was about all those beautiful flashbacks. All four main characters thought of times with her.

  • For Castiel, it was after Mary had come back from the dead and was hunting alone.
  • For Jack, with was Mary training him.
  • For Sam, it was while they were looking for Dean!Michael.
  • For Dean, it was a drive back with Mary peacefully sleeping on his shoulder.

When Mary’s body was brought back, it was clear what was coming next. Dean, Sam, and Castiel would give her a hunter’s funeral. It was the closure they needed rather than just knowing she was dead and having no body to bury.

However, I still don’t quite trust things. Castiel says that he saw Mary in Heaven (and with John, but with the real John or with a Heaven version of John?) but this is Heaven and the angels. I don’t trust Duma at all. I think there’s something off that Duma came when Castiel was calling out to Heaven.

Despite Castiel seeing the Heaven, it’s certainly possible that the angels created this mirage. They’ll know that making it look like Mary is dead and happy in Heaven will give Castiel and the Winchester brothers a reason to burn her body and move forward. It’s clear from the promo for the next episode that Duma wants Jack to take control in Heaven, so everything Duma did in Episode 18 would have led to this point.

Rowena made a point in saying that Mary wasn’t on “this Earth.” I thought that wording was extremely curious. Why “this Earth?” Could it be that the real Mary has been sent to a different Earth? Could this open the door to the Apocalypse World, where she could find Gabriel still alive and stuck somewhere?

Okay, maybe all that is just a pipe dream, but I just don’t trust Duma. It would be a shame if the writers brought Mary back based on that emotionally charged episode. For me, it would mean the flashbacks wouldn’t feel as important and as meaningful, but this is Supernatural. The dead just don’t stay dead!
