Someone Great on Netflix is a relatable and raw story of heartbreak and friendship
By Sandy C.
Netflix continues to reinvent the romcom genre with their latest entry, Someone Great, streaming now.
Someone Great stars Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow, and DeWanda Wise as a longtime bestie trio. The three friends have been through a lot together, but they are about to take on the biggest and most crushing heartbreak one of them has ever faced when Jenny (Rodriguez) and her boyfriend of nearly a decade, Nate (LaKeith Stanfield), break up.
The movie takes us through Jenny’s journey of accepting the breakup and the permanent change this will cause in her life moving forward. Someone Great is one of the most relatable breakup movies as it features raw emotions and takes us through Jenny’s most loving memories and the fallout of her relationship with Nate.
Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen Someone Great on Netflix!
When Someone Great begins, Jenny and Nate have already broken up. Audiences are quickly thrown into the story as Jenny is spiraling down in sorrow and heartache. The first two stages of the loss of her relationship, denial and anger, are skipped as we see a sobbing Jenny waiting on the subway full on in depression.

It’s a sad scene, but comedy is strongly present thanks to Michelle Buteau’s cameo. In that scene, Jenny is a mess, and understandably so. Viewers are caught up on the breakup as Jenny shares her story with the stranger — Jenny suggested to Nate that they have a long distance relationship after she lands her dream job in another state. Nate “doesn’t even wanna try” and the two break up.

Buteau’s character offers temporary support before she becomes bored and decides to leave. Jenny continues to cry (and drink).
Jenny gathers up her two best pals, Blair (Snow) and Erin (Wise), and decides to have one final amazing night in New York together. After all, she packs up and leaves in a week! Doing this again won’t be as easy and who knows when the trio will get another chance.
Could it be at all possible that Jenny is also dragging her friends along to a music festival hoping to bump into her ex? Predictably so!
Throughout the day, Jenny recalls some of her fondest memories with Nate, which audiences see through flashbacks. The first couple of flashbacks made me wonder if we’ll be seeing these scenes the entire movie, I just didn’t understand their purpose. Soon enough, though, they become critical to the story.

The first flashbacks show Jenny and Nate at the beginning stages of their relationship, they are loving towards one another and the two are real #couplegoals! But as each of these flashbacks pop up, the clips are less full of love and become more frustrating. Not stressing for audiences, but between Jenny and Nate.
