Castiel will eventually forgive Dean for his actions in Supernatural Season 14, Episode 19. We should too and here are my thoughts on why.

Supernatural Season 14, Episode 19 wasn’t an easy episode to watch. Dean made a questionable choice but it wasn’t anything worse than some of the choices he’s made in the past. I actually didn’t blame him for the initial choice, and I’ve explained that in this piece about the moment he crossed the line during the episode.

However, while Castiel is angry right now, this isn’t going to be a complete breakdown of their relationship. Eventually, Castiel will be able to forgive Dean for his actions. And we should, too. Sure, it’s not going to be easy for everyone, but there’s one thing fueling Dean right now.

It’s all about grief. Dean has lost his mom. Again! He’s grown up without a mother for the majority of his life and finally got her back. He didn’t get much time with her during then and it’s hard for him to say goodbye to her again.

This is shortly after sending his dad back to the past, where his dad will eventually die. He’s gained and lost both his parents and it hurts. Dean isn’t thinking straight.

Grief makes us do some ridiculous and questionable things. We’ve seen Dean act out this way in the past. Sam agreeing to go along with Dean’s plan is a sign of how grief can make people sometimes do out-of-character things.

Castiel will understand that. Right now, Castiel is angry and scared. He’s realized that Duma manipulated Jack and he’s angry about that. He’s angry at everyone manipulating Jack for their own gain and not giving this young Nephilim a chance.

However, Castiel has made bad choices in the past. Remember when he took in all the souls from purgatory to stop Raphael? How about when he let Lucifer possess him? He’s part of the family when it comes to making silly mistakes that can have catastrophic consequences.

Once the initial anger disappears, Castiel will get to a point of forgiveness. Everyone in the show will get to a point of forgiveness. Castiel will accept that Dean and Sam are human and they have flaws. We can’t expect them to be perfect all the time. Even angels aren’t perfect!

And that’s why we should forgive them too. Dean and Sam were both reacting out of grief. They’ll both come to regret their actions – Sam before Dean – and that will give everyone a chance to move forward in more of a positive light.
