Supernatural Season 14, Episode 19 saw Dean cross a line. Sam crossed that line with him but he could have stood up to his brother. Here’s what I would have loved to have seen.

When Dean Winchester crossed the line, I’d hoped Sam would stand up to him in Supernatural Season 14, Episode 19. There was certainly a chance and it’s time to look at what could have happened to make the whole situation better.

Sam lied to Jack, and Dean knew that he was the only person who could lie and get Jack in the box. Dean wanted to kill the Nephilim after the incident with Mary, and he knew he wouldn’t be able to keep his emotions in check. So, it was left to Sam and this was the point both Winchesters crossed the line for me.

I was completely on board with putting Jack in the box. It would keep everyone safe while the Winchesters figured out how to save Jack’s soul. But that was the problem. They didn’t know of a way to restore his soul. Sam pointed that out, knowing that Dean was planning something bad.

This was where Sam could have stood up to his brother. Not once did Sam make it clear that he would keep looking for a way to restore Jack’s soul. Maybe if this storyline had come up an episode later or if Supernatural Season 14 had a full season, there would have been a chance to see Sam hit the books, look for any way to restore Jack’s soul.

We’ve seen Sam drown himself in research in the hope of saving the people he loved. He’s never just given up on them, so this episode was so out of character for him purely because he didn’t say “well, I’m on board but I’m going to tell him the truth – I’m going to keep looking.”

A few seasons ago, Sam wouldn’t have stood up to his brother or would have initially stood up against him and then backed down. However, Sam has been through some excellent character development this season. We finally got to see him as a leader, making sure the Apocalypse World hunters were safe with their new duties. He should have had the guts to stand up to his brother.

In the end, Sam lied and got Jack in the box. You could see how uncomfortable he was about lying. He’s been fed up of the lies lately and so has Jack. I’m disappointed that he didn’t call his brother out on crossing the line immediately, but it looks like that will happen in the Supernatural Season 14 finale.
