Into the Badlands Season 3, Episode 15: Requiem for the Fallen
There were two major death’s in tonight’s episode of Into the Badlands. With just two episodes left, who will be left standing at the end?
Into the Badlands returned this week with another episode that wastes no time getting down to business.
At the start of the episode, Pilgrim arrives at The Widow’s house as they are about to flee. Nix steps up to fight him and she tells The Widow to go ahead and leave. Minerva hesitates but goes. When Nix charges she says she’s doing this for Castor, but she doesn’t stand a chance. Pilgrim makes short work of her. As she’s dying, she says: “Your Azra will be a wasteland, just like your soul.” Pilgrim snaps her neck, then twists her head off completely before tossing it down the staircase.
As they escape, The Widow realizes that Moon and Lydia aren’t with them.
No more Barons
When we return from commercial break we arrive at a funeral scene. Moon is laying Lydia to rest. The Widow and Tilda are there as well. After placing her in the grave, Moon points out that Lydia warned The Widow against provoking Pilgrim. Tilda tries to defend Minerva but Minerva tells Tilda that Moon is right. In her defense, Tilda uses the line: “You were her baron.” and Minerva says: “There are no barons anymore.”
Sunny and Bajie
Sunny and Bajie arrive at the battle scene and take in the devastation. There are many deaths on both sides. When they go into the house, Bajie finds Nix’s head. Sunny says that she saved his life and he couldn’t return the favor.

They make it to the refugee camp and Bajie points out that people from each baron’s lands are all working together for the first time. That’s when Sunny sees Minerva with Henry. (She looks good with a baby in her arms.)
Battle tactics
After previously telling The Widow that he planned to kill her when the war was over, Sunny has changed his tune. He tells her that they need to fight Pilgrim together. Minerva says that they’ll never defeat him. It’s clear that she doesn’t want to fight, and this is very much unlike her.
Gaius backs Sunny’s call that they need to attack Pilgrim now but Minerva is telling them they need to run. Moon also says he’s not running anywhere until he kills Cressida. That’s when Bajie steps up and says that if they are going to go after Pilgrim, they need more fighters.
He’s suggesting a team-up with the Black Lotus.
Later, after Bajie is able to convince Sunny to listen to him for once, Gaius shows up and says he wants to go with them. He tells Sunny that he too is fighting for his child’s future. At which point Bajie jokes: “You banged Flea???”
The Dark Ones
With Cressida back home. Pilgrim’s tech guy is finally able to repair the chamber. Meanwhile MK is suffering. He’s refusing to eat and is badly burned on his face and chest. He uses opium to relieve the pain some and when Pilgrim comes to check on him it’s clear MK has gone dark permanently. He says that he’s trying to heal himself but that it’s not working.
Later in the episode, Kannin shows up to visit Pilgrim. Cressida doesn’t trust her but she says that she’s there to save Pilgrim. She tells Pilgrim that the true legacy of Azra was to kill anyone without the gift, but she doesn’t realize that he’s already prepared for this. When she realizes that he’s excited she tells him that his soul is already poisoned. He was never meant to have the gift. She tells Cressida that she needs to look deeper to see Pilgrim’s true destiny because currently she’s blind to it.
When Pilgrim shows Kannin the Meridian Chamber, which he refers to as a temple, she tells him that it’s a laboratory. She says that the people were seeking to tame nature only for it to turn against them. She decides to fight him but she’s no match for Pilgrim and he uses his ability to take her gift from her. He tells her to tell Sunny what he saw today.
The Widow’s secret
Earlier in the episode, the doctor confirmed that Minerva is pregnant with a blood test. Later, after discussing the battle tactics, Gaius questions why she is suddenly running away from a fight. She tells him she’s pregnant and he is excited. He promises to protect her and the child but she questions if she should bring a child into a world like this. When Gaius says “we” she says it’s up to her.
A surprise return
Also at the refugee camp, Tilda runs into Odessa. She’s excited to see her until her new woman, Mercy, shows up. Tilda rushes to leave but Odessa stops her and tells her she was right when she said that they had to fight. She wants to come with Tilda but Tilda tells her that she still loves her and doesn’t want anything to happen to her. She tells Odessa to take the people and get out of the Badlands.
Conclusions
Cressida does a ritual to see Pilgrim’s future. He’s won the war but there are bodies all around him. He then breaks her neck and she comes out of the trance to see him standing there.
He tells her what he did to Kannin and you can see that she is hoping he didn’t kill her. He scares her, then apologizes for doing so and goes in for a kiss. As they kiss, his expression changes as it appears he realizes she’s doubting him.
Back at The Widow’s camp, Kannin arrives looking for Sunny and Minerva tells her where they went. At a Black Lotus outpost. Sunny and Bajie send the guy who was watching the outpost to get Magnus.
When Magnus arrives he is not on board with Sunny’s plan and the Black Lotus attack. Magnus and Sunny are fighting one-on-one until Kannin arrives. She and Sunny team up against Magnus at this point and then Kannin snaps his neck.
Kannin tells the remaining Black Lotus to lay down their weapons. She says it’s time to start a new chapter for the Black Lotus and asks them to follow her. At the very end of the episode Pilgrim gives more people the Gift as he prepares for another battle.
Based on the previews, the season/series finale will be a huge battle and I personally can’t wait to see what happens. The way the season has gone, it feels like the writers knew this may be the end and gave us a satisfying stopping point.
Into the Badlands returns next Monday night at 10/9 Central on AMC. Perhaps for the last time.
