Charmed moving to Fridays on The CW isn’t necessarily a bad thing

Charmed will move to Fridays for its second season in the fall. Once thought of as the ‘death slot’ of TV, moving the show to Fridays might actually be good strategy.

The CW surprised many by moving Charmed to a Friday night for fall 2019. While still part of the fall schedule, it’s moved to what has always been considered the “death slot” of TV. However, this may not be a bad thing for the show or a hint that The CW regrets renewing it.

Many would have expected that All American would move to the Friday night slot. After all, it’s the show that has performed the worst in terms of live ratings from the fall 2018 schedule out of the three new shows. However, it’s clear that the network wanted to move it to Mondays with Black Lightning.

Moving Charmed to Fridays could be a good strategy to keep the show going longer. After all, it’s clear that the first season is doing better in delayed viewing than in live ratings. Fans want to watch it but not on the strict schedule. So, moving it to a less competitive night for live ratings and allowing fans to then catch up over the weekend will be perfect for it.

Fridays are no longer really considered the “death slot” of TV. In fact, shows have been performing well on this night. You just have to look at CBS, where Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five-0 continue to be firm favorites.

On The CW, Supernatural once moved into the Friday night slot, leading to fans believing the show would come to an end. Instead, it gave the show the time it needed to get a ratings boost and move out of the timeslot. The same happened to Bones.

Then we can look at NBC’s The Blacklist, which was on the bubble and moved to the midseason slot for Season 6, only to be pushed back to fall for the upcoming Season 7 because of its success on Fridays. Last Man Standing proved to be a success on Fridays for FOX and is moving to Thursdays after the Thursday Night Football in the fall 2019 schedule.

Moving Charmed to Fridays doesn’t mean the show is failing or that the network is worried about it. It’s just a strategic move to make sure its lineup makes sense in terms of feeling from the shows — Charmed and Dynasty could make a good pair in terms of feelings from the shows.

The CW knows that it benefits mostly from its delayed viewings. The Friday night timeslot means little now for the network. The question is going to be how the CW shows fare without the Netflix deal, but that’s a completely different subject.
