As a Supernatural fan, you need to check out The Boys on Amazon Prime Video. And it’s not just because Eric Kripke is one of the showrunners.

Eric Kripke’s The Boys is one of the most talked-about TV shows coming this month. The release is just days away on Amazon Prime Video. If you’re still on the fence about watching it, let me tell you that every single Supernatural fan (old enough, of course) should check out this show.

Naturally, Kripke is a reason to watch the series. The creator of Supernatural has brought the graphic novel written by Garth Ennis and co-created, designed and illustrated by Darick Robertson to life.

The Boys is set in a world where superheroes are real and have gained celebrity status. As you would expect, that celebrity status has gone to their heads. They look like the real deal on the outside, but most of them are egotistical, fame-hungry, and selfish. Some are even psychopathic.

Because of the selfish nature of these superheroes, a normal group of humans decides it’s time for payback. Well, more like revenge. They’ve all lost something because of these superheroes, some more than others.

But why is it worth checking out as a Supernatural fan? Here’s why I think you’ll adore it.

5. The music is everything you’ll recognize

Okay, so there are moments where modern-day music is used, but there are also plenty of times that it’s all about the 70s rock. You’ll know the tracks that are played because they’re used in Supernatural.

More from Supernatural

Remember, this is Eric Kripke. You had to know that some of his own personality would shine through this TV series. The great thing is that like Dean’s love for old school rock, the tracks used on this show have their place and they make sense.

However, I do want to get you to listen out for the Spice Girls reference from Butcher. This is a scene you’ll want to remember so you can quote it the next time you need to do a team meeting.

One of the things that many Supernatural fans remember about the Winchesters is the love for old school rock. It’s become an integral part of the series. This is likely something that will happen with The Boys, especially with the fact that there’s a muscle car involved too.

Yes, there is a muscle car. Butcher doesn’t quite look after his as much as Dean cares for Baby, though!

4. There are fake FBI badges

There’s so much that feels like Supernatural throughout The Boys. Once you’re past the muscle cars and the music, you’ll focus on the FBI badge.

Yes, it’s as fake as the badge that Dean and Sam Winchester have. In fact, there are times that you’ll just think “what if the Winchesters were there.”

Billy Butcher is the one with the fake badge. Well, we assume that it’s fake. There is a back story as to why he claims that he’s from the FBI. And there are moments that he claims to be a cop. It’s clear almost immediately that whatever connections he used to have are certainly no longer connections that he does have.

He does get the band back together, though. There are moments you’ll feel like you’re watching when Dean went back for Sammy because dad was on a hunting trip. In The Boys, the setting is different and there’s a different reason to bring the “boys” back together, but you’ll still have a smile on your face.

Mixed with the leather jackets, the lack of actual home, and everything else that is so clearly Eric Kripke, you’re going to feel like you’re within a world that the Winchesters should be. Honestly, I want to see a crossover now!

3. There’s a lot of diversity and representation

Within the group of vigilantes, there’s a large amount of diversity. Only two members out of five are straight, white men. This is a problem that Supernatural has, but this Amazon Prime Video show is making it clear that it wants to stay true to the original graphic novel, while offering something for all those watching.

The diversity isn’t quite there when it comes to the superheroes. There is one black superhero, two (white) women, and one that we never get to actually see, but that’s it. The others are straight, white men. I wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing though.

You’ve got to remember that the superheroes are the bad guys in all this. Well, most of them are. And the views of the superheroes and the company overseeing them aren’t exactly diverse and progressive. So, is it really that surprising that there’s not much diversity within the group called The Seven?

The only representation that isn’t on the show (yet) is LGBTQ. Don’t write it off for that just yet. Remember that this is just the first season and it’s following the graphic novels. The showrunners are limited in some ways to stay true to the original.

Despite the lack of LGBTQ characters, the series is timely. There’s a huge focus on the #MeToo, which shows promise for being respectful and a voice for so many.

2. There are Supernatural and Timeless actors

As a Supernatural fan, there are high chances that you checked out Eric Kripke’s NBC series, Timeless. If you didn’t, you’ll want to catch up on the two seasons immediately. But watch The Boys first.

You’ll see some SPN Family members within the series. It shouldn’t be surprising that Eric Kripke is bringing a couple of SPN Family members into the series. Many showrunners will work with actors they know, respect, and trust.

It shouldn’t be too surprising to find out that Jim Beaver is in one of the episodes. I’m not going to share why or when, because I really think this will work out better as a surprise like it was for me.

The other actor is Christian Keyes. Yes, Michael is in it but don’t expect the character to be as bad as the Apocalypse World archangel. This guy is connected to the Seven in some way, but he’s not a superhero. And because of the lack of fame, he’s not as bad as so many others connected to the Supes.

There are some Timeless actors, too. Keep an eye out for various familiar faces throughout the first season — and I’m sure there will be many more in seasons to come.

1. It’s a story about protecting innocent people and revenge

There are some similarities between The Boys characters and the Supernatural characters. One of those is why Jack Quaid’s Hughie gets into the fight. He joins the vigilantes out of revenge after the death of his girlfriend. Sound familiar?

Butcher pulls him in, with his own story of revenge. You’ll get a few John Winchester vibes from this character. Then there’s Frenchie and Mother’s Milk, both of whom have their own reasons for joining in — mostly focused on the protecting of the innocent people instead of focused too much on revenge. Dean, anyone?

There are certainly stories of doing right by the world. There’s a need to keep innocent people safe, while also making sure the Supes are dealt with once and for all. Think of the Supes as the demons and the violent/vengeful spirits, while the “boys” are the hunters.

Of course, there are some demons and monsters that want to be good. Well, there are some Supes that want to do the right thing.

This series brings plenty of blood, guts, and so much more. If the Winchesters’ series was more adult (so not on The CW) I could have seen the amount of adult content being similar. I do want to emphasize on the amount of violence and gore there is. This series isn’t designed for the younger Supernatural fans. If you watch the likes of The Umbrella AcademyThe Handmaid’s Tale, and Game of Thrones, you’ll be fine!
