We believed freewill was real. The Season 14 finale proved it wasn’t. Alexander Calvert talks about dealing with that in Supernatural Season 15.

For the last 14 years, there’s been one major constant on the show. The Winchester brothers and their friends have fought for free will. Well, the Supernatural Season 14 finale made it clear that it was always God’s book. During SDCC 2019, Alexander Calvert talked about that and what it means for Season 15.

He started off by sharing that the big issue to initially deal with is this knowledge that the one thing the brothers have been fighting to maintain has never been real. God revealed that it was always written. That the brothers have never truly had free will. It’s something that Jared Padalecki also brought up during his roundtable interview.

Of course, technically there is some free will. Dean had the chance to say no to God. He refused to kill Jack, despite God telling him he had to. Dean made a choice that God arguably didn’t write, leading to the end of the world.

Alexander Calvert did go into more detail about the struggle though. The season will be “wrestling with the idea of what is free will.”

"“With God being a little, kind of, bored right now, the boys have to reckon with the consequences of everything that has happened over the last 15 years.”"

And what role will Jack play in all this? The last we saw of Jack, he’d been killed by God and sent to the Empty. Death!Billie woke him up, and now it’s unclear what the next steps of this plan are.

We all hope that Jack will reunite with Dean, Sam, and Castiel. There are a lot of apologies to be said (from Dean) and a lot of conversations to be had among all about the next steps. Calvert also shared that he hopes he ends up topside because filming The Empty is tricky logistically. It will be a lot of green screening, probably!

After the discussion about Supernatural Season 15, Alexander Calvert had the chance to talk about what the show means to him vs. the guys who have been around for all 15 years (or even 10 in Misha Collins’ case). He also shared about some of his favorite moments as Jack—we’re not the only ones who love his naivety.
