SDCC 2019: Brad Buckner talks about choosing who could return in Supernatural
Brad Buckner sat down with the press at SDCC 2019 to talk about Supernatural Season 15. The discussion got choosing who could return in the season.
It’s the final season and that means we have huge wish lists. Everyone’s is going to be different, especially when it comes to returning characters. Not everyone can make it back, and Brad Bucker talked about how to choose those who could return to Supernatural Season 15.
This isn’t about just bringing back anyone and everyone. The returns have to serve a purpose within the story. Those returns also need to honor the characters as we knew them and their potential for what could have been.

Naturally, there was a discussion about Mark Sheppard, who has certainly been vocal about not returning to Supernatural. However, should there be a way to bring back Crowley as Sheppard and honor the character, Buckner hopes that he would choose to return.
But what about everyone else? Characters need to have a reason to come back. There needs to be a way within the story that legitimizes returns. It’s likely that we’ll see the likes of Bobby and Charlie again. Their Apocalypse World counterparts are still out there. We also know that Rowena, Eileen, and Adam are returning at least for one episode each.
What about the rest? The show knows that some characters have become fan favorites, even if they haven’t been seen for a while. The Harvelles, Ash, Kevin, and Benny are just a selection that come to mind. Could the show find a way to bring them back?
Brad Buckner commented that:
"“It’s wonderful to bring back people…but that can get old if it’s not moving the ball down the field. You only want to bring people back who have an emotional stake with the Winchesters, somebody who’s worked really well [with them], somebody you haven’t seen for a long time who was kind of a fan favorite…Then the challenge is not just to come back and do the same old schtick, just to do it as a token, but to have them do something fresh.”"
He also talked more about keeping track of the mythology of Supernatural, the hope of honoring the legacy of various characters, and much more. You can check out the full interview in the video below.
