After looking at Sam and Dean’s best moments, it’s time to look at their angelic best friend. Here are Castiel’s five best moments from Supernatural Season 14.

Supernatural Season 14 gave us a higher percentage of our loveable angel. And the season felt good for it. More importantly, we got an episode where Castiel could solve a case by himself while helping Sam at the same time as well as a chance to see him as a father figure to Jack.

There were many great Castiel moments in the season. Trying to pick five isn’t going to be easy. I know there are going to be moments that other fans don’t agree with. We all have moments that stand out the most for us for various reasons.

I’ll be upfront and say Castiel turning to the shaman to help Jack isn’t going to make it to the list. While I liked the throwback to Gabriel, I felt Castiel was conned. There’s been little development when it comes to the naivety of this angel, who’s supposed to be a soldier.

But I digress. This is about the moments that do stand out. Here are what I believe are the five top moments from Supernatural Season 14 for Castiel.

5. Castiel’s seeing Mary in Heaven

When it happened: Close to the end of Supernatural Season 14, Jack accidentally killed Mary. At first, it seemed like quite an anticlimactic death and we didn’t really want to believe it. However, it was clear that this was the major death that the cast had hinted at during one of the conventions.

More from Supernatural

“Absence” didn’t bring us the typical death episode. Instead, we got flashbacks of Mary with each of the main cast, including Castiel. At the end of the episode, Castiel got into Heaven to see Mary. This was the confirmation he needed to know that she was definitely gone.

Why it’s the best: Castiel refused to believe that he couldn’t save the Winchester matriarch. This was a woman he’d gained a bond with since she was brought back from the dead, and he wanted to do everything in his power to bring her back. Seeing the Mary and Castiel flashback was beautiful, but this moment of him seeing her in Heaven was perfect.

There was a soft smile on his face. He got to see her happy with John. Whether it was a Heaven version of John or the real John isn’t clear and I don’t think it really matters. Castiel had a chance to see her happy, and he wasn’t going to pull her from that place. Plus, he was able to send the bittersweet news back to the Winchester brothers to help them through their grief.

4. Offering himself as a sacrifice

When it happened: After Jack’s death in “Byzantium,” Castiel headed to Heaven. He needed to get Jack’s soul back to help bring him back to life. However, Heaven was in trouble. The Cosmic Entity was there, in search of the half-angel that he believed belonged to him.

Unable to let the Entity take Jack, Castiel offered himself up as a sacrifice. He was even willing to go right away. The Entity accepted the trade, but he did learn that he’d get more time. The Entity wants him when he’s at the happiest he can be.

Why it’s the best: When it comes to trading lives, we know it as a Winchester trait. Sam and Dean have both either tried to or manage to trade their lives for each other. John Winchester traded his life for Dean. We expect it from the two of them.

However, we haven’t seen Castiel do it. This was a moment that made him part of the Winchester family. He showed his love for Jack, making it clear that having Jack around was the best thing for the world. It strengthened that bond between Jack and Castiel, while also showing us the level of humanity this angel has gained throughout Supernatural‘s run.

3. Figuring out the witch case alone

When it happened: In Supernatural Season 14, Episode 15, Castiel and Sam headed out on a case of their own. They found a town that looked like something out of the 1950s. At first, we’d hoped the two would work together, but Sam was infected by the magic in the town.

It was up to Castiel to figure everything out. Not only did he need to figure out what was going in the town, but he needed to get through to Sam. There was a moment he needed to help Sam heal after all the bad they’d been through during the season.

Why it’s the best: Sam fighting through the witch’s spell was one of his best moments, but it wouldn’t have been possible without Castiel. It was our angel who figured out the case. He found the witch, worked out how to fix things, and trusted in Sam to break through the magic.

This was an excellent chance to see Castiel as the soldier we know him as. Too often than not, the show’s writers forget the strong character that the angel used to be. He’s been weakened physically due to various things that have happened to him, but that wouldn’t have completely weakened him mentally. This episode was a reminder of how much the Winchesters have brushed off on him and a chance to see him at one of his strongest points.

2. Fighting to save Jack from Dean’s plan

When it happened: When Castiel found out about Dean’s plan in “Jack in the Box,” he was angry. He decided to confront Dean about it. The Winchesters had lied to Jack, something that the Winchesters hated happening between them.

Castiel wasn’t afraid to point out the hypocritical nature of the Winchesters. Nor was he unwilling to point out how unfair they were being to this soulless nephilim. Jack didn’t need locking up but needed helping.

Why it’s the best: Castiel was the moral voice in this argument. He became the voice of the fans, as many watched in horror as Dean and Sam went through with the plan to put Jack in the Ma’lak box. More often than not, it can be the other way when Castiel’s soldier instincts come through.

We got another look at Castiel’s humanity within Supernatural Season 14, Episode 19. This was an excellent continuation of Episode 8, where he made a trade for his life for Jack’s. There was nothing that Castiel wouldn’t do to help save Jack from this fate.

1. Making sure everyone was around Jack

When it happened: Jack’s death was one of the most heartbreaking moments of the whole season. We had to watch as we said goodbye to the Nephilim that became a son to Castiel and the Winchesters. However, not everyone could be around him when it came to Jack’s death.

Dean walked out. We could understand why, but this moment wasn’t about Dean. It was about Jack, and Castiel understood that. While there wasn’t enough time, Castiel did fight for Jack’s needs to get everyone around him when he died.

Why it’s the best: Once more, it’s all about Castiel’s humanity. This was a moment that stood out as the best Castiel moment in Supernatural Season 14 because it started off this path of saving Jack. Okay, he’d been working on saving Jack before, but this wasn’t just about saving Jack’s life but about saving Jack’s feelings.

Castiel knew that it was hard to watch Jack die. The Winchesters have lost so many, but this was one of the hardest moments because it was like losing a son. However, Castiel also knew that Jack was scared. What he needed right now was love from everyone, especially the one Jack seemed to look up to the most.
