13 Reasons Why Season 3 is now available on Netflix. Before you watch, check out what’s in store for Timothy Granaderos’ Monty in this exclusive interview.

It’s time to delve back into the controversial show that is 13 Reasons Why. Season 3 is now on Netflix and we know the fourth season will be the last. Timothy Granaderos talked to Hidden Remote exclusively about what’s in store for Montgomery de la Cruz and what it’s like having an end date.

Hidden Remote: The last time we spoke, you didn’t know if you were even going to be in 13 Reasons Why Season 3. There wasn’t much you could tell me, so it’s great to be able to do this follow-up. What can you now tease about Monty this season?

Timothy Granaderos We get to explore his vulnerabilities a little more. Anything that he did in the past isn’t justified, but you get to understand why he did some of those things or why he acts the way he does.

HR: There seem to be so many layers to this character, and we’ve only just scratched the surface.

TG: Yeah, absolutely! He’s as complex as the other characters, but we haven’t had the time to peel back some of the layers. In 13 Reasons Why Season 3, we’re introduced to his father, which is an interesting relationship, and you see some of his home life. You’ll get to know Monty a little deeper.

HR: What’s it been like as an actor to finally delve deeper into this character?

TG: It’s been fun because with Seasons 1 and 2, you kind of have to fill in some of the blanks yourself. In Season 3, there’s the help of the brilliant mind of Brian Yorkey and the entire writer’s room. It’s fun to get some of the questions answered for me.

HR: We know Bryce has been murdered in 13 Reasons Why Season 3. With Bryce gone, what’s it going to be like for Monty?

TG: It’s been interesting. Bryce was Monty’s friend and family. Once they split, Monty was left alone. He’s stepped into the role of the villain. His anger and aggression goes unchecked, and you’ll see the aftermath of all that.

It was tough. There’s a scene in Season 2 where it feels like a relationship breakup. On that day, it felt like I was losing someone close to me. Monty doesn’t have anyone in his life to look out for him the way Bryce does, so losing Bryce left a huge void in his life.

HR: Is there anything in this season that happened during filming that you can’t wait to see on the screen?

TG: Honestly, the further development of some of these characters I really think you guys are going to understand what makes them who they are. I think you’ll appreciate them a lot more. You think you know who they are right now, but like in high school, you develop a lot over the course of a year or two.

HR: We’ve already had so much, as well! I’ll be honest and say that I want to see the Monty-Tyler storyline developed properly. Male rape is such a taboo subject that this can’t just be used as a plot device.

TG: You know, until I was part of the scene, I didn’t realize how often it happens. It’s so unspoken. They’re situations you don’t hear about, and survivors don’t feel comfortable to talk about it. But how do they get better if they don’t?

HR: Last time we chatted, we touched on how Monty didn’t know what he was going to do until he did it. With delving deeper into this character, it’s going to be interesting to see the aftermath from his point of view. Does he even think that what he did was wrong? I’d hope so, but there’s a huge question looming over this.

TG: Monty is impulsive, and I don’t know! You’ll have to wait and see.

HR: It is very heavy, so let’s finish on some lighter notes. We found out recently that 13 Reasons Why Season 4 is going to be the last season. How did that feel for you and the rest to hear that it was confirmed as the final season?

TG: It felt right, I think. It was interesting because high school is four years and shooting Season 4 will be over the span of four years. I think we get to conclude a story on our terms and wrap it up the way we want to. I trust Brian and the rest of the writing staff.

HR: What will be your plans for after 13 Reasons Why?

TG: Oh, audition, audition, audition! It’s going to be fun. This was a huge stepping stone in my career and I hope to keep the momentum going. I’d love to do a film or an indie. I’m just looking to explore, experiment, and have fun.

HR: Do you have any preference on genre?

TG: I love sci-fi, anything removed from the reality of this world. 13 Reasons Why has been awesome but it’s so grounded in reality and drama. I’d love to put on a cape or have a sword or be on a spaceship.

HR: It looks like so much fun on the set. What’s been your favorite memory of the series so far?

TG: Of the entire series? Oh boy! Honestly, it was probably my very first day of shooting. I had auditioned for this show for a number of times and I didn’t think I was going to get on it. Then a recurring role popped up and my manager Scott Silva said I should take it.

When I got to set, the first face I saw was Justin Prentice [Bryce]. We only knew each other through auditioning. We didn’t really know each other on a personal level. When we saw each other, I just knew that this was going to be a good thing. Everything from there has just been amazing. We all really do love each other and we have fun on- and off-set. It’s a dream cast and crew.

HR: What are you going to miss the most about it all, whenever that may be for you?

TG: Getting to do the series with these guys. It’ll be like high school. We’ll go off and try to meet up, but we’ll be on different paths. It’s been four years and I want to write in everyone’s yearbooks, but we all have to graduate and move on at some point. This is time.
