Is there really free will in Supernatural?
For years, the Winchesters and Castiel have fought for free will. Supernatural Season 14’s finale brought up a major question. Is there really free will?
Does free will exist? That’s a question that will come up in Supernatural Season 15. It’s also going to be a huge deal to the Winchester brothers and Castiel.
For years, Team Free Will has fought for just that: free will. When it came to the battle between Lucifer and Michael, the group banded together to rip up the idea of destiny; to fight for their own lives and ignore the “grand plan.”

However, in the Season 14 finale, we learned that God had been writing the story all along. Even though the Winchesters seemed to rip up destiny, it’s now clear that wasn’t the case. This was just another draft in Chuck’s story, one where Team Free Will thought they had free will but were actually going along with a different plan.
It’s going to bring up plenty of questions of the things that have happened over the years. If the plan was always to avoid the apocalypse, that means Sam was always supposed to go to Lucifer’s Cage. He didn’t choose to sacrifice himself to protect the world. Chuck wrote this story for his characters.

Dean getting the Mark of Cain, dying, and become a demon were all part of God’s new grand design. The release of Amara was planned, Lucifer returning and the rift between worlds forming was all part of this big plan. God purposely put our heroes in the middle of apocalypse after apocalypse. He forced them to lose their friends and family, never giving a damn about what happened to them.
All they had to do was go along with the story.
Now it seems like it’s all over. God has decided to bring the end to them. We know that dealing with the current situation isn’t going to take over the whole season. There is going to be time for the brothers and Castiel to talk about free will and whether it really exists.
Once the brothers deal with Chuck, whenever that may be, will that mean they have free will? Or will it have always been written that they have to deal with Chuck. Has Chuck already written something that will happen afterward?
This isn’t going to be an easy season at all and not just because it’s the final season. For the Winchesters, everything that they’ve done or has happened to them wasn’t because of free will, and now there will be questions about things that happen to them in the future. Does free will even exist in the world of Supernatural?
In a way, it’s always been clear there isn’t such a thing as free will. Billie showed Dean all those books. One thing that is consistent in Rowena’s book is that Sam will be the one to kill her. Destiny will happen, but it’s choices people make that decide on the destiny that happens.
This changed slightly in Season 14. With Dean’s decision to lock Michael in his mind, all of Dean’s books changed. The endings were rewritten, which suggests that free will does exist. However, there is still the problem of a path that will eventually happen even if endings are changed.
