Naturally, we all wondered whether we should care. He’s a serial rapist and didn’t believe he had done anything wrong. Was there any redemption for him that made us care?
This would depend on your opinion of the justice system, especially the part that’s supposed to rehabilitate. Bryce did start to understand that what he did was wrong, and by the end of the season, we found out that he wanted to change. But he’d never get that chance, and I’m not too sure how I feel about that right now. But that’s for a whole different article.
Not just one person involved
You want to know who killed Bryce Walker. The final two episodes gave us all the answers. If you thought it might be like Murder on the Orient Express, you would have been partially right. There were multiple people involved, but not quite in the same way.
And it wouldn’t be the right person going down for it. But don’t worry; Clay was innocent the whole time and he was off the hook by the end.
It all started with Zach Dempsey, who saw Bryce at the docks and attacked him. He broken his arm and leg and then just left him on the docks in his own blood. Zach was certain that he’d killed Bryce and admitted to it all. All he did, though, was aggravated battery and assault. Bryce had water in his lungs, so Zach was off the hook. Deputy Standall made it clear that it wouldn’t have been clear where the broken bones came from so Zach wasn’t going to be arrested.
Zach’s actions helped the killer
Great, but who killed Bryce Walker in 13 Reasons Why? Zach’s attack on Bryce helped his eventual killer. Alex Standall and Jessica Davis turned up at the pier later. Alex as Jessica’s support so she could find out what Bryce wanted to give to her—a tape with an apology and a confession.
As they left, Bryce asked for help. Alex started to help him up but Bryce’s anger got in the way and he showed signs that he’d never fully be able to change. That threw Alex over the edge and he ended up pushing Bryce into the water below. With a broken arm and leg, Bryce couldn’t swim and he drowned in the water.
Alex and Jessica kept their secret together. However, Alex later turned to Zach with an apology for not telling him the truth and vice versa. The two are going to share everything now (just not anything about masturbation and all that, as Zach made it clear).
Who was actually blamed for Bryce’s death?
Alex Standall wasn’t arrested for Bryce’s murder, though. After all, Ani shares that she knows who did it and told the story, but changed the details of the person who actually did it. While talking to Deputy Standall, she made it clear that Monty was the one to kill Bryce.
Monty and Bryce had a beef after Bryce found out about everything that happened to Tyler. Charlie had heard the truth about the bathroom stall, so it wasn’t surprising that he sided with Tyler and supported him. It just so happened that Monty had been arrested for the attack because Tyler finally found the courage and had the support to tell the police everything.
Charlie was able to plant the tape Bryce gave to Jessica in Monty’s locker. Ani lied about being with Clay to give him an alibi. And so, everything could be pinned on Monty.
There’s no way of questioning Monty, though. It turns out that he was killed in his jail cell. You know what it’s like in prison. Even inmates have their standards and rapists, women beaters, pedophiles, etc. are the scum of the Earth in prison. It’s not surprising to hear that Monty was killed considering his attack on Tyler.
Deputy Standall knows that Alex was the one to kill Bryce Walker in 13 Reasons Why, but with everything offered up to him to pin it on Monty and with Monty dead, everything has worked out. Standall doesn’t need to arrest his son for the crime. Case closed.
But is it?
There’s a fourth season of 13 Reasons Why, so you know that nothing is quite over just yet. At the very end of the third season finale, we learned that Monty actually had an alibi—one that he was too ashamed to share. He’s gay (but don’t say that to him) and he was with a guy called Winston the night of Bryce’s murder.
Winston clearly saw something in Monty that wasn’t the evil rapist that we saw. He’s not happy that the murder has been pinned on Monty. I’m guessing that the truth will come out eventually. Will everything point to Alex and his friends in the end?
