Supernatural went classic with what appeared to be a simple monster-of-the-week episode. Here’s a list of the 5 best moments from Atomic Monsters.

Supernatural Season 15, Episode 4 was one that used classic techniques to keep us cozy. Sam and Dean decided to go on a hunt and it wasn’t one of their most challenging ones, by any means.

Before we go any farther, let it be known that this post is a list of the five best moments from this episode of Supernatural. Therefore, it will be mostly spoilers ahead. If you haven’t watched “Atomic Monsters” yet, you can head over to The CW app for that. Or you can run through our recap of the episode to catch up.

More from Supernatural

When you’re ready, come with us through our favorite scenes or seconds of the show and see how it all panned out. We got to see a good ol’ hunt, a tiny monster scene, and we spent some time with a couple of characters we’ve been wondering about.

We also got some important dialogue between multiple characters. Sam and Dean talked about their feelings and also got the chance to hear some strangers do the same. It turned out that their chat may hold reasoning that the brothers haven’t sorted out for themselves until then.

Let’s take a look at what Episode 4 delivered and see what the light and dark of it was.

5. The Meat Man

This quick but fun moment brought us into this episode of Supernatural. Dean at the table in the bunker kitchen when Sam wandered in. Dean offered him some veggie bacon, saying it was a little treat for Sam, who has always asked for it.

Sam didn’t take the bait right away, being as surprised as we were with Dean’s willingness to, well, try anything new. He quoted Dean, “I don’t want any of that hippie, Sarah McLaughlan, grass-eater crap in The Meat Man’s kitchen.”

I especially loved the side note that maybe Dean didn’t realize that “The Meat Man” might not mean what he thought it meant. But Dean assured him that it sure did. That was a pretty funny moment, if you ask me.

But it was only the cake that was iced when Sam finally took a bite of that veggie bacon, only to discover that it was straight-up pork. He called out to Dean that it was real bacon, and Dean reappeared in the kitchen doorway to declare, “You’re damn right it is. Meat Man!” We needed that giggle, guys.

 4. Fangirl survival 101

Let’s all welcome back Becky to Supernatural. Well, for a minute, anyway. As the theme has been so far for Season 15, we have been presented with another character from days of yore who is quickly removed again. But we’ll come to that in a minute.

First, we got to see Chuck turn up at Becky’s house with all his sadness. She’s married and has two kids and a very neat and lovely home now. But luckily, the hubby and kids were on the way out when Chuck appeared. And she was not happy to see him, either.

After they had a chat about what’s been going on for each of them, one of the things they discussed was what Becky did with herself after Chuck quit writing the Supernatural stories. Very quickly, I couldn’t help feeling like we were getting some real-life ideas for what to do as the SPN Family after the show comes to a close IRL.

Not only did Becky dip lightly into how she felt when the stories stopped, but she went on at another point to defend the fans against Chuck’s poor choice of ending. We’ll come back to that in a second. Again though, I felt like she was speaking for all of us, and Supernatural geniuses were telling us, “don’t worry, we’ve got you.”

She talked about how she wrote her own fanfic stories about The Winchesters. She gained a following, started making little figurines and selling them, and other such things to keep her in the world she had come to be a true part of.

Chuck came to the understanding (thanks to Becky), that what would make him feel like himself again was to write more of his favorite story. So he whisked to Becky’s laptop and started writing. Well, it didn’t go well. He was excited at first, but once Becky threw in her two cents (more like 50 cents), things went pretty sideways. Thanks a lot, Becky.

3. Bye, Becky

So that was fast. As I mentioned, in keeping with the newest tradition of Supernatural, Becky was gone pretty fast. But not before she could say some stuff that really got Chuck looking devious again. I have to give props to Rob Benedict for what have become frequent character shifts. He is really believable.

After he asked for her notes on what he had written, she ended up basically shredding it. She took that “I’m a writer again” grin off his face and it was replaced with the dagger-eyed God face we’ve been seeing on the show recently.

Becky said his jeopardy felt a little thin. She told him that it was basically boring and not scary and more of the same. At that point, it was funny because in actuality, the episode we were watching was following that sort of path. While I would never dare call the show boring, it was true that we were watching what was likely the most uneventful monster hunt they’d ever been on.

The back and forth between Becky’s notes and the scenes of the hunt became more and more connected as she went on. Finally, when he got mad and booted her from the writer’s seat, he took over the story, changing the tune.

The hunt went on as we expected, but I have that whole divine intervention feeling about what he did write. Becky was nothing less than incensed with what he came up with. She really let him have it, telling him “you can’t do this to the fans,” and going on about how dark and hopeless it was.

She was most bothered that it was just an ending. But Chuck reassured her that while he didn’t know how he would get there, he knew where he was going. “Supernatural: The End,” he said. I’m betting dollars to donuts we’ll be seeing that title again, btw.

Well, her husband and kids walked in at a really bad time and Chuck snapped his God fingers and made them whisper away to who knows where. Becky was pretty shocked and Chuck confessed that he was God.

Especially with his mood swingy nature at the moment, he didn’t take it well when she said he just couldn’t do this. He told her not to worry, they weren’t dead, just “away.” I had to wonder if anyone else might have suffered a similar fate, you know, someone whose body was never recovered, perhaps?

I mean, it would fit well that Chuck could’ve snapped Mary to “away,” giving just enough fuel to what ended with Dean putting God’s Equalizer to Jack’s head. I leaned toward Mary being zapped somewhere else when it happened, but I thought maybe it was accidental, by Jack.

Just keep it in mind, nothing on Supernatural is without reason. As Chuck told Becky, “I can do anything. I’m a writer.” That is the truth of things, and now that Chuck has written again, the Winchesters aren’t going to be happy to find that out.

Seeing Becky and her family “not dead, just away” seemed to have no purpose. That tells me that it surely does. Personally, I’m definitely expecting Mary’s return.

2. The hunt

Welcome to the Supernatural hunt that required almost no hunting. After everything that has happened, Dean dragged Sam out on a hunt to try and make things normalish and to keep doing the job. They ended up at a school that I was hoping would be another reason Dean was back in gym instructor attire. Alas.

Even still, a hunt happened. Back in FBI gear, the boys headed to school to figure out what was happening to the cheerleaders. They did some digging and easily found a fang, got a license plate off the security camera, and showed up at the front door of the suspect’s house.

What they didn’t expect was how easily the would recover the second missing girl and gain a confession. But what was even better, was the conversation that came with it could be the doorway for Dean to understand how to forgive Jack and Cass for everything he’s been blaming them for surrounding his mother’s death.

They were speechless as they listened to this teenager talk his mom and dad through the fact that he didn’t mean to hurt the girl he loved but he had killed her and couldn’t control himself. I was immediately reminded of Jack and how he felt about what happened to Mary. It was an accident, he was a monster, it was better this way.

And Dean asked the vampire boy’s dad about his willingness to let him cut off his head in his son’s place, the dad replied that Dean must not have kids. I saw a clear look on Dean’s face that told me we were both on the same page with the Jack stuff. As the dad explained that parents will kill or be killed for their children, surely Dean must have thought of Cass.

At the end of the day, the boy said goodbye to his parents and went willingly with Sam and Dean. They drove away and into the woods where we were left with a shadowy implied decapitation of the newly birthed monster who wanted to do the right thing. Just like Becky said, thin jeopardy.

1. #AKF

Our number one moment from this episode of Supernatural carries some weight. After the hunt, we had some time with Sam and Dean riding home in the Impala. The story went back to the opening concern that maybe Sam wasn’t OK. Our first scene had Sam and Dean fighting in the bunker in a familiar red lighting environment.

What we saw was a horrible scenario where Sam had been drinking demon blood, had killed people they loved and had demons tearing through the bunker killing hunters. Perhaps the new King of Hell. After all, it ended with Sam snapping Dean’s neck.

Luckily, it was a dream. But it was in line with the glimpse we saw before when Castiel was trying to heal Sam’s shoulder wound from Chuck’s gun. Was it meant to be a look into a possible future? Is it what Chuck wrote that had Becky so angry? I know we’ll find out.

However, things like these dreams have had Sam feeling even worse than he would dealing only with the fact that he recently killed Rowena on purpose. Missing Jack, Rowena, his Mom, Dad, even Jessica and now Castiel, was proving to be very heavy.

As the boys headed home together, Dean gave Sam a little talking to. He told him how he had been down the road of hopelessness, even recently at the crypt, when he felt like it might just be fine to let go and “cash out,” as he put it.

But what he’d realized was that Sam was a reason to keep going, the memory of his lost loved ones, all the things they had been through, were reasons to “keep putting one foot in front of the other.” Substitute the names used, and this clip from Supernatural readily make a beautiful speech for anyone who’s feeling on edge about going on.

We know that Jared Padalecki’s real-life efforts through AKF have been loudly and effectively supportive of many who struggle with mental health and well being. The “Always Keep Fighting” mantra has gained its own following and self-propelled family of supporters. And we’ve seen this theme through the history of Supernatural.

I’ve begun to notice in the recent episodes of Season 15, being the final run, the creators of the show appear to be addressing the fans through the dialogue and situations. Not to say this hasn’t always been true. We’ve even seen tributes to us, the fans, deliberately and directly. Rocky’s Bar was no small example that our show sees us as much as we see it.

This exchange between the brothers highlighted what Sam was dealing with, what Dean has been through. Having been through loss and hardship, seeing evil, knowing love, losing hope and finding it again, all the roads we have traveled together on the path of Supernatural.

I like to think that while Dean’s speech and Sam’s response are expertly part of the storyline, maybe it’s also the show reaching back to us. Things end, but there is always more to look forward to.  Thanks, Supernatural. We see what ya (maybe) did there. And hey, even if you didn’t, you still did. Carry on, my wayward friends.
